How our world changes....

Barron Falls 02.jpg

How it is today ...................

[EDIT: Praps I should mention that Barron Falls are near Kuranda, Atherton Tablelands, inland from Cairns. They are having floods etc right now]

I have travelled the Newell Highway for the last few years and always wanted to see the Hinckley Falls with actual water over the falls/No Luck yet. One dayIMAG0158.jpgIMAG0157 (1).jpg

They had the falls on TV last night on a news clip and it dwarfed what your heavy  pic looked like ,  they said it was an all time record for flooding over the falls , it would be spectacular to see it in person , though I feel sorry for the folk that are being subjected to the deluge of rain up there at the moment. Any caravaners stuck up there in it ?

Yes....yesterday mornings falls were even heavier. I'm in the vicinity. Ugh.......never doing another wet season ever again (been saying that since 2013 lol).
I will probably go for another look sometime, but I've been hiding out in the van. Firm believer in not blocking up the roads unless I need to be out there - the volume of road closures are phenomenal, and crews are working very hard to clear the way. I don't think they need sightseers blocking the jams further. A friend (fellow vanner here) just had to be flown to hospital from our local because the ambulances can't get through in time because traffic is so backed up. Plus you run the risk of rockfalls and trees falling on your car.

Totally agree - either stay put, if you are safe where you are, or move out BEFORE it gets to the point where you are stuck, the caravan park that was flooded had some damage done to its buildings - i.e. - a motorhome through one wall!

Back in the 80's popular opinion had it that the water authorities used to open a valve above the falls each time a train load of tourists went past.

Don't know how true that was?

It was a dribble when we saw it on the way up to the Tablelands & not flowing at all on the return journey.

There are water catchment works above the falls.
