You can get a weaker dose of Voltaren over the counter, Just take twice as much. Think it's actually cheaper on a script and you maybe able to get 4 weeks supply on a script with 5 repeats. Doc once per 24 weeks and chemist once per 4 weeks. My wife reckons Voltaren is OK but I've never had any luck with it. Problem is with painkillers and the like, you also have to take something else to stop the painkillers from wrecking your internal organs. Relation in her 70s died last week and the autopsy revealed paracetamol poising of pancreas and other organs. Knew she had a lot of physical pain but didn't realise just how much panadol she had been taking and over how long.

Probably need to come up with a few alternatives suggestions then go to your doctor. Even ask your Pharmacist what is the best without a script although recent legislation has removed such stuff as Mersyndol (that worked for me when I needed something).

Family friend relies on morphine based medication for chronic back pain but usually resorts to chateau cardboard by mid-afternoon then ends up going nigh-night early.

Ditto for my wife. She has a script that only allows one repeat. Earlier this week, her doc gave her some post dated scripts to last out this years big trip. Still have to go the the Chemist one per 4 weeks.

Tramadol is a morphine replacement and lyrica is very good for back referred pain. Keeps me going until technology provides a solution. Neil

Your best bet would be to enrol in a Pain Management Course as opiates are known to be ineffective after around 3 months and if your Dr is still prescribing them after that period of time without recommending that you do a Pain Management course, then he or she is being irresponsible in your ongoing care.
