Mount Kosciusko National Park

We are planning a trip to Narooma from N.E. Victoria in a week or so, and want to stop overnight about half way. We love the area around the old Kiama Courthouse and wonder if it is permissible to stop overnight somewhere along the Snowy Mountains Hwy with our van? Has anyone stopped over along this road? Your views would be most welcome.

No matter when you come, it will be cold at night at that elevation. the later in the year, the colder it will be... I think there are toilets at Kiandra, but not sure. Possible a better place to camp would be Three Mile Dam, about 6 km west from Kiandra. There are camp spots among the snowgums around the lake there, and it is pretty. Also there are fish in the dam (licence required). Almost certainly there are no showers at either place.

If you come via the Elliot Way, there is a camping area O'Hares, at the head of Talbingo Dam. There seems to be campers there on most nights these days. This is a lot lower than Kiandra and hence should be a bit warmer. If you want a shower and campground there is MacPhersons Plains on the North side of the road, just above the final descent into O'hares, but I know nothing about the facilities there.

There are plenty of camp-sites between Tumut and Kiandra. There are 5 alongside the Blowering Reservoir, some may not have much flat ground. Then there is another often recommended camp ground at Yarrangobilly Village Campground as you cross the Yarrangobilly River. Then around Kiandra there is the Three Mile Dam campgroundalready mentioned plus another few just past the old DMR depot. Click on the links to see more

Just remember all those camp grounds are within the national park and pets are not allowed in them. I would suggest you purchase ($8) and download WikiCamps. This will give more info on what is recommended here.
