You can buy a brand new one in Europe. Powered by a Subaru motor. Many being used in hire camper fleets.

Cheers,
Peter

We bought one in the UK in the 80's when spending a year back in Liverpool with my family. Went all over Europe in it.

Never missed a beat.

We were,  and still are,  impressed with the layout we had.  The cooker was behind the front  passenger seat.

I sold it for more than I paid for  it. Not much but it was asking price.

I never had to do anything mechanical to it just routine maintenance.

Great unit.

Mechanically the old air cooled VW engine had quite a good reputation especially the 1800 size (when new). Fast track to the 1990's onwards and new engines could be sourced from Brazil. I ordered a new VW trike in 2009 with brand new made in Brazil 1916cc engine. It was rubbish quality. After much heartache a Subaru engine replaced it. Much better, cheaper to repair and better economy. So these old buses really need the Subaru engine even Holden v6's are used. This means the kombi is often no longer original. Beetles, well I had a couple. Not much ventilation with two opening windows (plus vent windows), and that hot air cooled engine under the rear floor. Hence yet another Subaru transplant required for air-conditioned comfort. Expect lots of costly mods, radiator where the spare goes up front, coolant tubes in the chassis, lots of engine mods to fit. And you cant have auto on most models due to not enough room between the swing arm suspension for an inefficient vw 3 speed like hens teeth to find. I had an auto in my new trike, trike new auto 40yo. There is a kick down solonoid you cannot replace and used- well like winning a lottery.I was also a Jaguar owner. Two marques to stay clear of IMO oh , and Lotus....make it 3. Keep your money. Tony

Wow $198k for a polished chaff cutter , I had two different kombis as a kid a 72 and a 76 which was from memory the last of the air cooled model . It had a 2litre fuel injected motor . Even the old 1600 in the 72 model took me and my girlfriend halfway round oz surfing  , I loved the kombi for camping out . In the 70's we spent around two weekends a month on york peninsula . 6 of my mates had kombis as well ranging from early 60's to mid 70's .We were in a convoy coming home from yorks on weekend , it was a stiff head wind and the early 60's model was in the front of the line , we were all behind a semi coming out of Port Wakefield . The 60's model had a 1300 cc motor , he went out from behind the semi to overtake , the head wind hit him and he went backwards we all went past him and he went to the back of the line and then somewhat as he lost the slipstream from the semi. I have always wanted to get an old kombi and do it up , but its a pipe dream of mine . One birthday my wife bought me a model of an old kombi with surfboards on top , she said it was the closest to my getting one.I suppose she's right we all remember our youth and the fun we had , just a way for me to relive it I suppose , I'll keep dreamin'

We hired 2 for our daughters wedding last year , the guy lives not from us and was more than happy to hire them ( him and his son drove them ) they were both immaculately restored , and he was telling us he'd been offered in excess of $100,000 for one of them ( looked the same as the one in your you tube video Aus-kiwi ) , the bridal parties went in them to the cathedral from our place , then to a winery for the reception later , my daughter and now husband drove a friends MG from the cathedral to the winery .... great day :)

Anything made in Brazil is rubbish - a bit like Japanese products after WWII.
