Kings Park bushfire closes roads, leaves smoke haze over Perth....

Residents in Perth's western suburbs awoke to smoke haze this morning thanks to a suspicious bushfire in Kings Park that has closed major roads into the city.

The bushfire started shortly after midnight and led to a watch-and-act notice being issued for Subiaco and Shenton Park in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A firefighting helicopter hovers over the Kings Park bushfire in front of the rising sun.

This was downgraded to a bushfire advice notice shortly before 7:00am once the bushfire was contained.

About 40 firefighters are on the scene fighting the fire, which is contained but not controlled.

Several roads have been closed in the area, including:

  • Thomas Street closed (both directions) Rokeby Road to Kings Park Road
  • Kings Park Road left lane closed (westbound) Fraser Avenue to Thomas Street
  • Fraser Avenue closed (both directions) at Kings Park Road
  • Forrest Drive/Park Avenue intersection closed
  • Park Avenue/Pool Avenue intersection closed

The fire started near the intersection of Kings Park Road and Kulunga Grove in West Perth and is being treated as suspicious.

Gidgegannup, Augusta bushfires downgraded as WA hit by fires and flooding

Emergency services in Western Australia are battling three bushfires in the state's south-west along with flooding from a tropical low that has dumped more than 400 millimetres of rain on Broome in the Kimberley.

The Gidgegannup fire started around 11:00pm on Monday and had been threatening lives and homes, fanned by strong easterly winds of up to 80 kilometres per hour.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) said it was now contained but was not controlled, and a possible threat to lives and homes remained.

Augusta Shire Council president Pam Townshend said nine local fire brigades were continuing to battle the blaze in the South West region, aided by 10 brigades from the Department of Parks and Wildlife.
