Total fire ban flagged for southern Tasmania on Sunday, as campfires escape on reserves...

Tasmanian authorities have declared a total fire ban in the south for Sunday as the state heads into high temperatures and dangerous fire conditions across the long weekend.

Camping area damage

An escaped fire damaged the campground on Dart Island.

Temperatures in the south are expected to hit 33 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

The Tasmanian Fire Service is urging people to exercise extreme care with fire on Friday and Saturday.

A total fire ban means no fires can be lit in the open air at midnight on Saturday night all fires, including campfires, must be completely extinguished.

The conditions have also prompted a reminder from the Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) there is a blanket ban on campfires until mid-March.

PWS state fire manager Paul Black said some campers had ignored the ban, and resulting fires could have been much worse.

Over the last 24 hours we've had five unattended campfires and in the last week we've had 20 fires reported to us in our reserve system.

Some campers not just in Tassie ignore total fire bans KJ. The last two Fridays have been total fire bans at GreenS Lake nth central VIC and the CFA have had to come and put out camp fires. Nothing said or done about it after that though. Book 'em Danno. Then out with them on the spot.

Edit. Out with the campers that is.

"ÿep" they're out there for sure Dougwe,   maybe some real hefty on the spot fines Might wake some people up, the money would sure be welcome to the C.F.A.

I would hate to guess how much it costs today to turn out one fire unit, I recall when I was in the Brigade, it was $750 for one unit to leave the Station,  and that was over 18  years ago now. !!!
