EPIRB

Has anyone heard of a SPOT GEN 3 GPS MESSENGER, it is an American product, but wonder if there was something similar here in Oz.  It is a substitute for an EPIRB, where you can also communicate with folks etc, they have a yearly subscription of about $220.00, but am really looking to see if anyone has heard of anything similar to this.

Many thanks

Gday...

Here ya go Leither ... it came up on an earlier thread ...

http://thegreynomads.activeboard.com/t64234167/epirb-plbs/

My post to that thread was -

Gday...

I have yet to invest in a EPIRB/PLB or similar - mainly because they are mainly (only) for life threatening situations.

I will be getting one of these before heading off again in 2018.

Spot GEN3 Satellite GPS

Apart from all the usual "EPIRB/PLB" features, I particularly like the ability to have -

  • 'custom message' - sending a pre-programmed message with GPS location to nominated contact/s when out of mobile range - such as stuck in XXXX bush camp but all OK;
  • tracking - automatically sends and save GPS location, tracking your progress - downloadable to Google Maps;
  • Check in/OK - when out of mobile range push a button to a advise a contact with a pre-programmed message to advise arrival at your destination and all OK.

I have spoken with quite a few people who work alone in remote bushland and they find it invaluable ... particularly the ability to advise, with the push of a button, that one has arrived at the destination and all is OK - also including the GPS location.

Apart from all that ... I have absolutely no affiliation with the product or company

Cheers - John

Hi Leither,
We have the "Spot Connect", an earlier version. Works a treat, with one of the best features (apart from the "SOS" feature) is being able to send family and friends a message, and co-ordinates, when we are in remote places. Hope we never have to activate the rescue feature, but nice to know it's there. The other good thing is that you can send a message to someone in the event of a non life threatening situation. They, in turn, could call the nearest police, or get help heading your way.
Good product.
Bob

My husband and I decided to buy Spot Gen as I am a solo female traveller.
We like it as it meets our needs perfectly.
I have the personalised message so depending I when I send it to him, he knows I have started out for the day, stopped for lunch or finished for the day.
I highly recommend it.
