Voting again

How do people get on with elections when you are travelling. We live in Qld and will be in Cooktown when this latest one is on. How do others get around this. Thanks Dave

Better still if you travel to other states and expect to be away for lengthy periods you could contact your electoral office explain your situation and register as an itinerant voter that way you can still cast your vote however if you end up in a remote location don't know the election is on you will not get a letter threatening a fine some time after you arrive home. Yep.

However last Federal Election the postal vote slips (application was available but not the actual voting slips) were not available when we headed off. Actually voted absentee in Bourke (NSW) for seats in Victoria. No idea how I would have gone if it was just a Vic State election and I was in NSW but I'm guessing there is a way.

I spent over an hour talking to the QLD Electoral Commission today. I explained I would be caravanning in NSW on polling day and urgently needed postal voting papers. First up they said I can register on their website to request postal voting papers - HOWEVER, the idiots haven't adjusted the website yet, there are currently NO website provisions to get postal vote papers for this election. Rang them back - was told I could go to any polling booth and vote Absentee - I said NSW is not voting, there are no polling booths open in NSW on polling day. Finally after wasting untold time with a call centre lady (she said, please bear with me, it is my FIRST day doing this - Gee, the QEC is ready for the elections). Then after I stated that I'll be leaving QLD several weeks BEFORE polling day, I needed the papers as early as possible - Guess what ? they haven't even sorted out the final list of candidates and the polling forms have NOT YET BEEN PRINTED - they can't be posted out before Nov 7th - I said that gives you 6 days to get them to me, otherwise I will be unable to vote.

Gee what a shambles, Anastasia's snap election has caught the QEC right out unprepared - you'd think she would have checked the QEC was FULLY ready before she called the election.

PS - since writing the above they have now adjusted their website, but our request has already been lodged by phone.

Federal elections have polling booths all over the country but state elections are different. You should be able to do an absentee vote in Cooktown as you are not leaving the state.

If all else fails and you can not get a postal vote or you can not attend a polling place you will get a notice that action is being taken to prosecute you. If you are interstate, all you have to do is is explain that it was not practical to attend the polling place and state where you were on the day. There usually a place on the paperwork for you to include this. I have done this several times whilst interstate for some time and an election has taken place.
