Hi Splottboy, The only rest stops that looked ok were nos 573 & 574 in the Camps book which had tracks going off and some vegetation. (bins but no toilets). The others looked to be really windswept and bleak. I didn't go to Koonalda as I'd heard the road was bad. Also, as mentioned on your other thread, there had been heavy rain in the area. Next crossing I'll be staying at one of those mentioned above.

only go into Koonalda if there is no rain in sight - was dry when we went in and just a very light shower next day saw us slip and slide in several places to get out the following day. The turnoff was not sign posted - was just a track off the highway so take note of the distances - but a great place to stop and explore
Eric's camp about 10klm East of border will be about the best you'll get over there. Don't tell anyone though!!! It's just gorgeous. My absolute fav. In fact...I think my pic(avatar) is taken there.

Why would you on earth, suggest such a run down dump of a place Grubbygypsy All that litter/ toilet paper, Feral cats, Crows everywhere.
People camped ten feet from you, play music till 3am.
Could I suggest Ecula Caravan park with hot showers, Veiws over the southern ocean beaches. Just the place to be.
Thanks so much, I wouldnt risk it in our Fiat Ducato Avan Ovation 2wd

Erhhh WOW Jim - when were you last there? I've been there twice in the last two years (last time probably around February) and saw NONE of that there. It was quiet (just me mostly), clean and no animals (maybe birds don't recall)....just a gorgeous view.
This would be a prime example of what wikicamps induces if you've seen all that since Feb 2017.
I remember reading on here a bloke being shot down for saying how wikicamps causes good places to be trashed. But he was dead dead right.
We did this trip last year. There are a heap of magnificent spots on the coast between the border and Nullabor Roadhouse. We stayed a night at Twiggy's Camp, which has been closed. BUT there are many more, all with beautiful views, Bunda comes to mind. Be aware there is NOTHING there other than the view, being self contained may be a good idea too in the interest of keeping the place clean.
Staying a few days will depend on how much water etc you have on board. I would strongly suggest getting wikicamps for your smart device, this will show all the free camps plus comments and photos. Enjoy
PS. Our avatar is our van at Twiggys.

If only "Old" Cyril & his wife Audrey Gurney were still alive! They would be standing outside at their fuel pumps ready for a bit of a yarn (if you had time), welcoming visitors to their sheep property - (Koonalda Station).
I first met them in 1973 as a raw technician (to the Nullarbor) working on the E-W microwave system. We thought in those days that a system carrying 600 channels on each bearer was large! Fixing their magneto phone was an experience especially having to shoo the goats that wandered in through the back door away from my tool bag!
Yes the cave had their fruit trees growing - "on top", the weather & limestone prevented any such growth. It also harboured many fossils of giant marsupials that lived there in millenniums gone past.
Just a word of warning to any who would look at exploring the numerous blow holes & caves on the limestone sheet. Some like the cliffs have thin edges, I'd guess NP&WS would have removed the ladders that were in some. Also if you find any with water in them, be careful as the depths can be deceptive as it is VERY clear.
