There is a Scam on Facebook. When you are on the Home page, you will note a number of advertisements and photos on the right side of the page. Different types of photos appear and an item will be highlighted with a red circle, such as the sample below. I've seen three different photos including the one below. The other is a bear walking along a dirt road with a cub. The cub is circled. The other is a girl walking towards a large rock with a message telling you there is something coming out of the rock. Wording under these photos is to entice you to have a look. If you click on any of these a message will pop up telling you that you have downloaded a nasty identity stealing virus and to call a phone number listed on the message. The message looks like it's from Microsoft and the phone number is local, but it's not, it's a local number thru Skype. You will talk to someone, a smooth talker who will give you a load of bull****. You will be asked if he can download a program onto your Computer to clear the Virus. The program is called "Go To Meet" The program gives control of your computer to the scammer who then installs another program to grab your identity details, Bank Pins etc. A little further along you will be asked for a payment for the work he has done, usually around US$400.00. If you tumble into the payment and give credit card details, he's got you by the short and curlies !!! Watch your credit card statement for unauthorised charges
The solution is don't click on the photo. If by chance you do, ignore the pop up message and close the Browser. In the event you get conned and do call the number, don't let them install anything on your machine. Just hang up. Then go to control Panel, Uninstall a Program. If Go To Meet is listed, delete it. Just be careful. There are some nasty people out there..
