As mentioned in another thread; last week I bought a new Honda EU-20i generator from a Honda dealer. I did a little gentle pushing and got a price of $1550 however the gen is available for an advertised $1600 with free delivery from another dealer. The gen comes with a four year Honda warranty.
Out of interest I have been following an E-bay auction for a used Honda EU-20i gen. which ended at 11am today. The seller said it had only been used "half a dozen times" and it looked in good condition, although no age was given, but who knows how it's been treated and what its condition is? And, of course, there is no warranty. It sold for $1440.
For another $110 the buyer could have bought new with full warranty. It pays to do your research before buying expensive second hand items on E-bay.

Just went thru this myself. Finally decided I'd get a Honda EU-20i or Yamaha equivalent. Omitted all the other cheaper brands although several were tempting. Reason I went for H or Y is for service. I paid about $100 more at my local dealer than over the internet. The shipping costs would have wiped out this saving. Also, the transport company would not ship the oil or oil within it. The dealer put fuel & oil in it, gave me a new bottle of oil, started it up and showed me how to work it. It really was a flip of the coin as to Honda or Yamaha. I went into my local Honda motorcycle dealer. He only sold industrial Honda generators but Yamaha domestic. So I ended up with the Yamaha.
Any auction whether online or not always attracts people willing to pay better than new prices just so they can win. I never buy anything on auction, it's always cheaper anywhere else.
I once attended an auction where they were auctioning off those $2 plastic buckets, final price was $5 and people were lining up to get ripped off!
Wen I used travel to Asia for work in the 1980s, we used take all the junk-mail catalogues with us. However on one trip the Target catalogue got the attention of customs in Taiwan. The ladies underwear pages were considered too risqué and of course the customs officer couldn't read / speak engrish. Eventually got thru.
I'm not much into Auctions but sometimes wondered how the Ebay auctions worked, but not enough to google the subject.
Most of the houses in our area sell by auctions ... to Asians. Our local Real Estate Agents (mostly Asians) tell us that the Asian buyers prefer Auctions & you invariably get a much better price with little risk as you set your reserve & can make a vendors' bid.
Edit (to avoid any impression of racial bias) ... We have lots of Asians living in our area & they make very good neighbours (once you get used to their sometimes different customs) & many are active in community, political & charitable activities. Plus they provide a great range of vibrant affordable restaurants.

E-Bay are very good at ripping you off and will NOT respond to Emails or other forms of contact.
I have offered to take E-Bay AND their dealer to Consumer Affairs, the Ombudsman or attend court over a deliberate attempt by E-Bay &/or their dealer to rip me off for a lousy $25.00. No answer from either business. But surprise, surprise the purchase amount suddenly dropped by $25.00 which proves they at least read E-mails. Told them to park the article in a dark place.
Check thr postege too. Some are free. Some fair.BUT some also will try to sneak in, postege, several times and more.
The purchase price of the items.
Allways look at thr sellers Ebay name on right of page. There,s a %age figure beside it
ABOVE around 95/96% is usually safe.
Below that I don t normally touch.Though I,ve been hving problems with some 99% sellers recently.
In China. Just do ALL payments with PAYPAL.They do have good protection.
Over and above what Ebay supply.
