I had lunch with a good friend at the weekend. She is 50 and was diagnosed with cancer one year ago - she has been fighting it well and may survive... who knows...?
We discussed my plans to sell up, buy a caravan and go AWOL and she reminded me of a phrase I had forgotten:

Its seems countless people have approched our rig in admiration...as if they cant/wont ever get to do similar. Whether its an unusual rig or a common one it seems some just procrastinate and end up "maybe one day". While they think.....we live the dream.

Been living the dream since retiring 12 years ago. Last Thursday found out that retinas on both eyes peeling off. From a test on Thursday morning, to getting some prelim laser, to being booked in for surgery all in 16 hours. Going into surgery tomorrow to get a Vitrectomy on left eye and more laser on my right eye to stick both retinas back. Can't do anything for about 4 weeks.
I've broken 21 bones in 8 incidents, been under full anaesthetic 11 times, local anaesthetic 10 times and so far I'm still smiling and vertical. When you wake up in the morning without a chalk-mark around you, you're still a winner.
A senior exec where I worked was a workaholic and was saving for a "rainy day" when he had a serious heart attach. Whilst recovering in hospital he realised it was "raining". He took all his sick leave, outstanding annual leave, long service leave and did all his bucket list things before returning to work.
Go for it Mike Harding if you can. I'm in remission from stage 3c cancer but chemo buggered me and I'm by no means out of the woods yet. we're in the process now of selling our investment properties ( 1 to go ) have bought land and will build, but before all that we go "AWOL" for 6months Aprill next year, then spend 6months traveling ( maybe 8 ) each year. Cannot afford it but cannot not afford it.

Love this life on the road, my husband and I had set off to spend the rest of our days travelling, but four months later, he had a major brain bleed, and passed away.
I did my grieving, occasionally towing my small caravan to Victoria etc., but then I met my current partner and now live the life of our dreams.
