The collision happened about 11.45am on the Kennedy Highway in Mareeba, about 60 kilometres west of Cairns, and involved three vehicles in total.
The driver of a Mitsubishi Lancer, a 51-year-old local man, who was involved in the head-on collision with the campervan was declared at the scene.
A 63-year-old woman, who was driving the campervan, was airlifted to Cairns Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The driver and two passengers of the third vehicle, an SUV, suffered only minor injuries.
The Kennedy Highway remained closed for almost six hours, before reopening just after 5.30pm.
