Kidman Way

Hi all. My wife and I have just returned from a couple of months in Europe. Back a week so need to plan a trip !!! Thinking of the Kidman Way across NSW. We will be free camping and using pubs wherever we can. Any tips from you folk who have done the trip would be welcome. We have diesel heating so not worried about the cold nights. Any magic spots that we should not miss ? Cheers and thanks in advance.

Apart from the ones that others will tell you about we also use this site. You can get a lot of pubs that allow you to stay. Obviously they like you to have a meal in return but I work on the principle that I'd rather pay for a nice meal than pay to stay on a bit of dirt.

The Chinese meals at the Hillston Club a short walk from the CP are unbelievable. You can camp at Mt Hope Pub.

Did the full Kidman Way this time last year. On my bucket list is to do the entire Kidman / Matilda way.

It's pretty flat open country along that route. Most of the interesting things to visit are in town, ie CP camping. Most of the rest areas look strictly one nighters just for crashing. The RA at the Colleambly turn off has dunnies, shelter with tables and shade. There are RAs along the Bidgee at Darlington Point that may be suitable to leave your van whilst visiting Griffith. There is a free one at Lake Wyangan Nth of Griffith. The rest are pretty ordinary.

The mine at Cobar is brilliant. You stand in a cage and look into this massive hole. Views of the countryside are brilliant. I think it was called Fort Bourke Hill Lookout and is well worth the few kms side trip.

Gotta recommend Mount Hope, we have camped there several times, both out the back of the pub on the flat area 200 m down or so and also at the back of the former public hall where there are toilets and showers with no water.... no fee's so no loss. Pub is interesting, but for us best of all was the walk up the hill across the road from the pub, it has been an old copper mine, there is a great wall of mullock along the road side... but out the back are all the remnants of a busy settlement and major mining operation; including some very deep holes in the ground. (I love ém). A fascinating place to wander for a few hours. Goolgowi caravan park, quite new, designed to get travelers to stay and spend a dollar, pub did an excellent parma. Cobar rocks my boat too, Caravan park was great, we left out van there to do Mount Grenfell, no charge. We found plenty of old stock route camps along the way, where we could spend the night well off the road, and have a camp fire and safe sleep.

Enjoy the drive, it is great country.

Thanks. Obviously some great things to see. Really looking forward to it. Depending on how long we take on the Kidman we may carry on up the Matilda. So many places to see and things to do.
