Cheers to Pt Lincoln, we're heading nor'east along the Spencer Gulf coast, next stop Whyalla. We'd take a couple of whistle stops along the way, Tumby Bay particularly, after a mate said, "It's a beautiful spot". He'd spent a day or two there, making use of the tiny caravan park-up at the CWA facility, paying around 20 bucks for the bay with toilet, shower and power available.
He was right, sweet spot, even though the weather was less than ideal. We made a point of lunching and checking out the jetty there.
We had the dining room to ourselves at the Seabreeze Hotel on Tumby Bay's waterfront. So it meant a fine meal and great service from the friendly and conversational young barmaid/waitress who hailed from Victoria. My mate had put us up to this place and he wasn't wrong.
Wait for it!! Catch it if you can! Squid fishing is huge along the SA coast. This chap who hailed all the way from northern NSW, had garnered a catch from the Tumby jetty. The locals know where to get a quick feed and wait open-mouthed..
Tumby Bay's other pub is a very fine old building, but we didn't indulge there.
That's a landmark little structure on the waterfront at Tumby, an art gallery I think. Time to move on, so we didn't get to check out inside.
Our only other stop before Whyalla was for a quick look at Arno Bay. Less protected from the elements than Tumby Bay, the chilly springtime weather had us taking a quick trot along the jetty, a chat with a hardy old fisher with chilled blue hands, and retreating back to shore-side shelter.
The need to move on didn't allow us time to check out the internals of Arno's well preserved pub. Nice looker though.
Whyalla, here we come!

I/We started our fishing for KG whiting and looking for the REX Hunt fishing for Snapper episodes from TB.
If you were not locals you needed to do the ground work.
After many trips $$$ with our kids back then, we were accepted and got the place wired.. Off shore are the Sir Joesph group of Islands some 12-15km away.
Rex never caught any of his legendry Snapper from here. Just the photo shots.
G'day Jim, didn't try that bakery, noted for a future trip though. Got to stay at Tumby sometime. Venus and Tumby would be my SA stops. I'd take my boat though, not the van. Yep, KG would be high on our list along with snapper. Snapper are about our number 1 fav. WA's favourite, dhufish, are a bit too bland for our taste. Our boat is fairly small so we'd be limited. I've come across Rexy once when he showed up in WA. Crazy bloke but did a lot for rec fishing. I prefer him to Worsteling so I wish he'd come back.
I have met Rex a few times over the years including when he was calling the footy on 3aw in Melbourne. He also had a fish and chip shop in Port Melbourne VIC called 'Delish Fish' The food came in a box that was in news paper looking bag. Not bad but nothing to write home about. The man can fish and call footy too.
