A very slow start to W.A. Wildflower Season....

If any of you good People are racing West to see this year's Wildflowers,

You can all take your time, there is very little to see at present,

Here is an up-to-date report on where they are, or rather where they haven't appeared as yet,

The report does say that late rains have helped, lets hope the rain hasn't arrived to late !!! ..........

Mid-West Wildflowers

  • Geraldton: Take a walk along the Chapman River to view flowers, birds and reptiles. Join a volunteer either Saturday or Sunday on a guided walk. Ask Visitor Centre staff for time and departure point.
  • Mullewa: Nothing in bloom at present
  • Tenindewa: Nothing in bloom at present
  • Pindar: With little rain occuring in the area, some wreath flowers are blooming at Pindar.
  • Canna: Still few dry, with a small number of orchids present. Camping welcome behind the fire station.
  • Coalseam Conservation Park: Generally THE hotspot, with little rain, a few everlastings had germinated. Camping is welcome amongst the flowers, with natural park fees applying.
  • Chapman Valley and Yuna:  No sightings
  • Mingenew and Three Springs: Nothing in bloom at present
  • Northampton: No sightings
  • Kalbarri National Park: Kalbarri has a fairly long wildflower season with great variety, meaning that different plants flower at different times. With late (winter) and heavy rain at the beginning of July, more wildflowers should start appearing soon. Currently in flower are various types of Banksia as well as Smoke Bush. Check Kalbarri Visitor Centre for updated information.

BUT _ check out this item   http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-07-05/heavy-rain-leaves-amazing-wildflowers-western-australia/8680442

Heavy summer rain and devastating floods across southern Western Australia have left an unexpected legacy an early start to what is expected to be a bumper wildflower season.

Towns across the Southern Wheatbelt, Great Southern, South West and South East Coastal regions were left with multi-million dollar damage bills after unseasonable storms dumped hundreds of millimetres of rain over a single weekend in February.

Below is the Eastern Queen of Sheba orchid.

Hi K.J thanks for this information we are planning a wildflower run in September around the Mukkabudin/beacon area. Can you tell me where to find an up to date where the wildflowers are blooming, if there is such a site?
Thanks also for your frequent references to interesting news items.

G'day Dhutime, We are planning a trip in the same area, at about the same time, that is, if the Wildflowers do show ?????

Here is the Web Site I use for the latest info.....

https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=5&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj0rt7e1JTVAhUCG5QKHYiFA_YQFgg_MAQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.australiascoralcoast.com%2Fattractions-events%2Fwildflowers-on-the-coral-coast%2Fwhere-to-see-wildflowers&usg=AFQjCNGceAZ3lTk9dI7wx_dXH8E1mfsT1Q

Heres another web page with more info......

http://www.australiasgoldenoutback.com/

Apart from using this address, another good place to contact for info, is the Tourist information Mob in either Merredin or Geraldton.

As I said, we plan to do the Wheat Belt Way trip again this year, same as last year, only this time, we will be off at the first hint of the flowers showing, because if they do show, I've a feeling they will be here today and gone tomorrow. last year we were a month too late !!!!

WE might spot you on the road somewhere, just look for that old kiwi with a long lost look on his face, confusebiggrin wouldn't be the first time.

We have Geraldton Wax,Harbingera, smokebush, bottlebrushes flowering and lots of buds on smaller plants starting to happen here. The trick with a lot of wildflowers is you have to actually get out of your car and go for a walk in the bush!!.They aren't all signposted. See a patch of bush close to the road, find a safe place to park and go for a wander and you will be amazed at what is there. Once this front has passed and the sun comes out there will be lots of flowers around.
