A day stop at an RV park main street Beggenden Queensland (inland from Maryborough, has found us at the bakery. The best pies and sausage roll I've ever tasted.
A local lady told me people travel from Rockhampton to buy them.
Great little town. Where have you had your best pie taste?

In a previous life I was heavily involved in baseball and we got Clarks Pies fresh delivered every Saturday. They were made in Mortlake north of Warrnambool VIC and transported to many country towns. Have not seen them around for many moons now.
I rather like a good Angus Beef pie now. Curry pies are nice too.
Here in down town Townsville I found 'Mals Pies' are nice.

Hey Brickies, yep had Parkers pies Rutherglen a number of times, as good as Beechworth Bakeries pies. The latter has a "Ned Kelly pie" with an egg on top and cheese in the meat...yum. But the Biggenden pies are even better.
I'll make some detour on the way back to Vic.

On the way back from the north coast last week....had a pitstop in Dunnedoo ( NSW )....and there is a little café / pie shop / lolly shop at the western end of the main street that does the best pies and sausage rolls we have ever tasted....made right there on the spot too.
Cant remember the name of the shop ....but it is straight across the road from one of those horrible computer controlled dunnies...the ones with flashing lights and piped music with a timelimit.
Considering the number of bakeries that produce pies across Australia from small country towns to large cities how any can anyone possibly claim that any one is the best ? The only claim that you could make is that it is the best pie that you have tasted which still only a matter of personal taste. I was on an Etihad flight a couple of weeks ago and ordered a fancy sounding meal from the menu, in brackets it said inspired by our partner airline Qantas - I basically got a meat pie with tomato sauce (enjoyed it too).
We reckon the best pies are made in Colac Vic, those Ned Kelly pies are the best anywhere, full of steak mince, bacon, a full egg and topped with cheese, then wrapped in nice flakey pastry, pity they don't post them to W.A. the locals could learn a thing or two !!!

Camden on the southern edge of the Sydney Metropolitan area has a great little cafe called Creme della Creme. Great pies and pastries. Well worth a visit if travelling south. Camden is a lovely historic town.
We also rate the bakery in Burra SA as having the best pasties we've ever tasted.
In outback WA and NT they don't seem to know about bakeries. They are few and far between and in roadhouses they only stock commercial cakes. We couldn't wait to get to Burra last year.
The Apollo Bay Bakery Victoria has sensational pies and cakes but their famous Scallop pie is to die for. 3-4 fresh scallops in every pie with either a mornay or leek sauce.
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the bakery/Pies at Birdsville.
Then there's the Pie Shop just North of Kempsey - Fredrickton? They used to have the largest range but since the bypass was completed, the store has changed hands & moved into better premises, reduced the range but improved the quality. Even though the previous product was very good.
We always pull off the highway to sit in the cafe & enjoy the pies. Yes in the plural. I had to go back for seconds the last time we dropped in.

Clarks shop is still in Mortlake but I don't think pies baked on site anymore. They are still good and any pies drives when my kids were at school (school or sporting clubs) all came from Mortlake.
In late 2014 I called into that shop Rusty. It looked like the factory might still be out back but not used. The pies in the shop were square not round and tasted nothing like the original. Sad.

I've just had one of the best pies today. Lamb and Rosemary at Barcaldine Bakery, next door to the supermarket.
Also Beefy Pies at Gympie and Ettamooga Pub on the Bruce going into Brisbane. Stop there each way on my visits to RBWH for checkups.
Interested to read about the Biggenden Bakery Pies. Long time since I've had one of theirs. I understand they are now in new premises with a cafe they didn't have when I lived there.
