If you are looking at CP's, book now.

Personally, regardless of what you end up doing, I'd book, and if you don't end up going in, call and tell the park, so they can lease the site to someone else. Or not. But I wouldn't wing it....

Free low cost in most towns, if you choose x camp spot and get there and its full the odds are the next free/cheap camp spot is no more than 1/2 half away. Don't pre book just keep it free flowing

Hi guys help plz , we are going to Tassie this December 15th -31 st I have booked a motorhome so we could travel around a bit , we were thinking cheap campsites with a stay in a park now and again , I am now starting to panic a bit as people have said we will need to book ahead as it will be busy Would I have been better going B&B and hiring a car or sticking to our plan , we want to see the east coast mainly with a day or two in Strahn we just wanted to follow our nose but don't want to end up with nowhere to stay

There are a lot of free camps all over Tassy = great spot. Over the time you are going, it is the absolute peak - we spent Christmas 2012 at Friendly Beaches, near St Helens - had a great time, lots of people got there, but no trouble at all - we even got some fresh fish of one family. The trick is to get in to a place early, if you don't arrive till 5 pm or so, the places can be packed. I know you said you just wanted to follow your nose, but you need to be practical as well - if you have a motorhome and arrive at a camp, then decide you need to get some bread - odds are you will lose your spot. Not wanting to rain on your parade, but the locals go down to the coast for their holidays - all the way from St Mary's to St Helen's. (50k maybe)

You will always get a spot, I am sure, and look for some of the cheaper places like the one posted just after your post - looks fantastic, and Deloraine is a lovely little town, with a free camp there as well.

Enjoy Tassy - it is a beautiful spot. "

Hi Marydoll,

Haven't been to Tassie over Christmas so can't answer your questions. If you are looking to take a hired motorhome to Bruny Island check to see if it is insured to go on the ferry. You may find, in the small print, that it is not covered to be taken over water (this is so for a lot of hire cars as well but a lot of people do it though). If you are looking at doing the jet boat cruise you can do a tour via coach to Bruny Island from Hobart or catch the coach from the ferry wharf if you like. Enjoy your trip. Cheers.

It'll be full on everywhere at that time of the year. We did a 15 night self drive round trip staying in cabins. Everywhere we went there were motor homes clustered around public toilet blocks illegally camped overnight in no camping zones. You could always join them.

I don't usually hang around public toilets disbelief was asking for advice not sarcasm , as I don't want to park up illegally that's why I asked on this forum if I would need to book in advance .I found you to be rather rude in your reply ,maybe you should park next to the toilets as you seem to be full of it

We stayed in Tassie Xmas 2015. We did not book any sites just winged it. At no stage did we have trouble getting into caravan parks (twice) or free camps. We stayed in Tassie for 6 weeks from late November till early January.
We stayed at OldMacs in Lonnie over the Xmas period 3 days. It was basically empty. All other free camps had plenty of room.
If we went again we would not bother booking.
Our stays ranged from coastal to inland. Plenty of water and dump points.

Cheers
John
