Don't know if that's a serious question or not but in terms of cost you don't round things up or down until you get to the total which means if you bought 100 ltrs at 123.9 you would pay $123.90 not $124. Obviously a pretty trivial amount for most of us who are only filling our tanks but I guess for companies who buy & sell many thousands of ltrs it could possibly mean a few dollars. The reason for the average suburban servo to be advertising prices like that would most likely be (as Dougwe suggested) - because it sounds cheaper..
Back in the old days I asked why is something was 19/11 instead of 2 quid and I was told it was so that the cashier had to give 1d change from the 2 quid tendered meaning the cashier had to put it through the cash register and not straight into their pocket.
I know there are holes in that story but I believed it at the time....think I was about 12yo doing my first paper run (a complete disaster!).
Nowdays I realise that if the same item is $200 in one shop and $199 in another I'll buy the cheaper one.
$ 1.24 is still way to much for starters
Around Brisbane petrol is around the $1,08
I wander why an barrel of oil is half the price it was 2 years ago
Our petrol or diesel didn't go down that much only 25ct or there about
Realistically the dearest Metro areas in the country.
What other metro area???? AVERAGES around 1 30 a ltr.
As Their BASIC, all yr round. fuel price.
we often get up round 1.34\1.37.
$1.25 would be niiiice.
Haven't got an answer to your question, but i have asked many times and no one can give an answer so will ask again.
How come fuel/oil firms can charge point of a cent example: 123.9 123.7 ect when no one else can or doe's.
Certainly no other retailers do it and servo's are retailers as the bulk of there profit is from grocery sales.

In 2008 petrol was $1.60 a litre and oil $138 a barrel
In 2017 petrol is $1.20 a litre and oil $45 a barrel
With the price of oil 1/3 of the 2008 price, petrol should be 1/3 the 2008 price, that means it should be 53c a litre.

We're staying near Yeppoon, Rosslyn Bay servo has $125.9/ltr.

It only sounds cheaper if you have not trained yourself properly. Every time you see one of those prices, round it up an speak out the rounded up price(until it becomes second nature to you.)
I can't see the reason for fuel prices to vary so much over the states.Terminal Gate Prices- have a look at at their purchasing prices.

I do just that Peter, if it is $133.9 I always say to myself it is $1.34.
I also don't really worry about it too much as I reckon if I did I would'nt be out in the playground. I do go to cheaper servo's if I see one that is of the bigger names though.
Edit.....Ooops, forgot the, 'nt on the, would.

Someone is making a big quid!
Good Luck.
The 1/3 calculation would perhaps be right if the only cost was the oil itself.
The product at the bowser has cost inputs like ....
. Transporting the raw & refined product
. Govt taxes
. Refinery process
. Advertising / Marketing
. Servo running costs
. Profit margin at every stage
There are probably a few more that I haven't included. So the 1/3 ratio probably applies to only a fraction of the total cost (& don't forget the ever increasing outrageous salaries of all the Executives along the way)
@ Hako - 19/11 instead of one quid. There were 20 shillings to a pound.
19 shillings and 11 pence (19/11)....cashier needed to give 1 penny change from a pound/quid tendered. 12 pennies in a shilling. 19/11 is one penny short of a quid.
In my neck of the woods there are a few servos that are much cheaper than the big name brands. Nowadays their fuel is of equal quality to the others apart from an additive or two that doesn't actually offer a lot for the money. One insider was reported on the web as saying they just pour the stuff into the tankers before filling the fuel for delivery.
Oz standards are heavy about fuel quality these days. And anyway, in the West most fuel comes from the same source. The cheaper outlets are few and far between near the Big Smoke, but Nik and I virtually always buy our fuel at the much better prices because we pass a couple of these servos fairly regularly. Never had a problem with 'em. One cheap-price country outlet is actually under a big name anyway, a truck-stop so trustworthy enough. They're involved in a price war right now and our last fill there last week was 115.9 for diesel, while our local was asking 133.9. Usually the independents charge about 11c less p/l than town servos. What the..?! Begs the question, how can they do it when most city outlets are way up there price-wise. Obvious rip-offs.
Possum3 you took the words out of my mouth....Hako what he is saying is that if something was 19/11d and you gave him 2 quid (pound) you should have got one pound (quid) one penny change not 1d....
If your after the cheapest fuel on your travels down load (fuel map).
Macca cheapest servo in Rocky is the Liberty first on the left when coming from south.
Just my two bobs worth. My first wage was 8 pound 17&6pence, they don't put those symbols on computers nowadays.

Ah...now I see my error....mean't to say 1 quid, but said 2 quid probably due to old age stupidity plus the ingrained conversion 2 $ = 1 quid.
" It don't work in all area's only very big towns. , If you want to be on the road pay the money or stay home ."
FYI Brickies it does work.
It relies on the public to keep up to date. Prices change all the time so it's never 100%. Fuel map is the same. Beats being a slave to big business. Saves me heals.
