Oodnadatta Track

hi

we are Jane and Graeme. We are looking to travel the Oodnadatta Track soon (road conditions pending). We have a 26' van towed behind a GMC. Is the Track suited to this size van??

thanks for your help. Cheers

Welcome to the gang Jane and Graeme, enjoy here and out in the playground.

Mmmm, I wouldn't mind a GMC when I grow up, some would say, If I grow up. I do have a baby GMC though, my Colorado and love it.

Make sure you keep checking in and letting us know how you are travelling. I can't help with your question as I haven't been that way yet.

I wouldn't pull a van that size through, also depend where you enter and exit the track. Yes, no, possible, maybe, it all depends on lots of things that I don't think can be advised until 24hrs prior to
cheers

The Oodnadatta Track is basically a wide gravel road, with some sections of corrugations. We took our 21ft van along it, and many other vans were also travelling it at that time, we were able to travel at about 80k on much of it, but did slow down more in some areas with heavier corrugations. In the dry there shouldn't be any problems for a van of any size if driven to the conditions with slightly lowered tyre pressure. If its been raining recently though it often closes and can become unpassable for several days, so always check before you go www.dpti.sa.gov.au/OutbackRoads/outback_road_conditions/area_3_oodnadatta_track

Agree with Meredith.
As well as corrugations which can vary depending on how much traffic and how long ago it was graded there is also the problem of stone damage to the van. These long major gravel roads are generally in good condition which causes trffic to drive too fast. This results in stone being flicked up off the road, especially from the tugs back wheels, at great velosity resulting in damage to the van. So take it slowly. If possible protect the front of the van. The best way is to fit a Stone Stomper, about the only real defence your van will have from this type of damage.

Hi, Travelled  the Oodnadatta Both North from Marree to the Mt Dare t/o then returned South again last month. The road was in excellent condition then. Massive amounts have been spent on that (& other) road in recent years. it is a GRAVEL road so the normal precautions should be adhered to.

Enjoy the drive one that has plenty to see & do tis loaded, with history.

Mike.

We took our 24ft from Coober Pedy-Oodnadatta-Maree last year with absolutely no problems at all. Go for it.

Thanks to Moonraker, Explorer and Diggerop for you friendly advice. Will consider all plus the road conditions before we take off. We do have a stone guard on the front of the van. Cheers
