Hi all, just wanted to let any one travelling to the big rock that there is no Chemist in Yulara shopping village. so make sure you have enough supply of your drugs before you head this way.
Why this situation exists at a location that only exists for tourists is a complete mystery.
You can buy anything else.....at a price!! ??
I would think that demand doesn't justify having a chemist in this location.
In an emergency, there is always the medical centre.
Yulara isn't alone in not having a chemist when we travel, so some planning between larger centres is always required to ensure medications are kept in the van.

Crikey,no chemist at Ayres Rock eh, shock horror, the reason may well mystify you Dolly, however I suspect the coin will have dropped for the vast majority of travelers.
If your on some type of necessary medication it's in your own interest to have a supply that will last for the duration of your trip, even pharmacies in rural area's have been known to run out of various medications.
It's up to you to make provision for your own medication before embarking on a trip, hoping what you need will be available where and when you need it is not good enough.

You say there is not enough demand but I beg to differ here because this town only exists for tourists and a large majority of these people are seniors with daily medical needs and requirements. You could also probably do without a newspaper or a hat with Uluru stamped on it but guess what .... you can buy them.
Another thing to remember is that this place is host to many fly in guests as well and they don't always have a caravan full of all the necessities that we carry. Also the Medical centre is closed on weekends and public holidays .
I carry everything I need both medically and mechanically but there are times you still need the unexpected and this joint should be providing that .
As you say Dolly, the place is full of tourists. They want the hats, shirts, souvenirs and paper. Generally, many of them require little if any medication that would justify a dedicated pharmacy type set up. And those that of require medications would normally ensure they are carrying enough to meet travel between major places.
As with my reply re the dump point, perhaps contact the supermarket at Yulara (rather than the authorities), and suggest they consider a small pharmacy section. I doubt they will consider it however, as there is such a range of medications, they couldn't possibly cover everyone, and many would probably go out of date.
The best thing for medication still remains to ensure you stock up at major centres to ensure you have what you need.
Sorry, but as I said, there are a great many other places in Australia that don't have pharmacies, so I suggest that you may be disappointed at a few more places yet on your travels.

Well, there you go. My post was intended originally for those people who may be misled and think, like I did that this would be one of those special places that you could stock up...... but it was not to be!! ho hum!!
I'm sure the local medical centre has an arrangement with a pharmacy in Alice Springs to deliver medication to residents of the area.
Tourists, should take responsibility for their own requirements, if your able to plan and make a trip to a very remote area I'm sure your capable of looking after your own health needs, if not, suggest you remain within easy driving distance of major cities and towns.
Hint! its called the outback because its remote and has very little in the way of creature comforts, don't be lulled into a false sense of security,people still perish in this country.
Always take enough prescription medicine to last between major towns and all your repeat scripts. Also have a decent first aid kit containing such things as panadol, sunscreen, skin moisturiser, muscle rubs, antiseptic cream (metho), mouthwash, bandaids, cotton wool balls, nail clippers, etc. However, other than prescription medicine, everything we need is generally available from a supermarket. Make sure you regularly check the use-by dates on all your kit. Even have some small sample toothpaste tubes and small soaps from motels. All our stuff fits in a small lunchbox.
You can actually make up a good kit with small travel size stuff from the likes of Kmart and The Reject Shop.
Another handy kit that we carry in the car and in the van is a "toilet kit" - roll of loo paper, some old face washers, hand sanitiser, 250ml old juice bottle with water, and some baby/hand wipes (even KFC ones) all in a small toilet bag. Always carried the loo paper but the extras have really proved handy, especially at free camps with basic loos.
Hard time! no, not at all, simply reinforcing the fact that a bit of very basic research before a trip will provide the information needed, Dolly must have traveled through either Alice Springs or Port Augusta on the way, it would have been prudent to stock up on essentials in one of these towns before venturing into a very remote outback area.
Many have perished in this country because of lack of preparation or foolhardiness.
It cant be repeated too many times, don't venture into outback unprepared.

It would probably be hard for a remote area to have a full supply of medicines on hand, as some will have a limited shelf life Which is probably why there is no chemist at the rock
In Western Australia we are reminded to check our medicines, and if they are over a certain age, then to throw them out
I was reading (last year from memory), that in the north of Western Australia, the older folks (people my age), were cluttering up the emergency sections of the local small hospitals In their rush to go on holiday/travel, they had forgot to take their medicines with them
I had (in a different life while playing on the employment rides), been in many isolated places, where the local nearest town did not have a chemist, but did have very small hospitals, and one doctor (sometimes)
The procedure if you got crook, was to:- Visit the doctor Doctor sends script to nearest Chemist (sometimes hundreds of kilometres away) Medicines came with (sometimes weekly) stores to town Patient to pick up medicines at nominated places, such as Doctor/Hospital/Post Office agency, etc
