We are planning to travel on the coast from Townsville to Hervey Bay starting about mid July for about 8 weeks . We were keen to just meander and not book into parks until last minute. Not having been up that way for some years now just wondering if this is possible or are most parks consistently full on the coast and we would be best to book well ahead which sort of defeats the idea we were hoping for but are we just dreaming. We have a 21' van plus so not a tiny one that can squeeze in.
The most popular time of the year on that stretch, you'll need to book well ahead of your intended stay.
We're on the Capricorn Coast for 2 months at the moment, all CP's along this coast are packed to the rafters.
Try some ''stealth camping'', every public toilet block in this area has a rig parked next to it overnight, skulking out on sunrise. can't believe how brazen they all are particularly as there are NO CAMPING signs everywhere.

Depends how flexible you want to be. Last year we were up there and sometimes had to stay different towns eg Bucasia Beach instead of in Mackay. We booked about 3 days ahead.
I haven't booked anywhere and did the coast above Mackay a few weeks ago. However, being school hols now, I will ring ahead as its got a lot busier and will be for the next two weeks.
