Anyone up here for Finke?

There must be some GNs up here for the Finke?

I stayed on for it....which I'm a bit sorry about at this point. I'm hoping the race makes up for that decision.

But if anyone's here and wants to catch up, just yell out.

It's a bit different to the '80's.
But you'll enjoy.
Pick a spot and set up camp with fridge and shade.
with a coupla camera's.
One for video and one for stills.

I never raced it but we have ridden parts outside of race dates.
Pretty much all bikes in those days.
I rode a 400 Maico.

Magic.

I wouldn't get up from the first drop nowadays.
The sand is very soft.

Everything's different from the 80s Macca. Way too much regulation.

Sitting at prologue now....all is great, aside from the smokers!!! (They should regulate that a bit better).

Grubby.

They didn't want cars or any four wheelers in there.

Reason being. Same as today.
they rip up the ground, ten times more than the two wheelers.

EVERYWHERE you go. Off road, where 4 wheelers have been.
The ground is totally ripped apart and destroyed,
for the width of a road
Over the whole areas they cover.
Specially on Sandhills and soft\wet ground.

Total destruction.
Designated areas. Where the owners fence it off for such. Fine.
But they destroy everywhere else.

Perhaps the only off road work of any distance done by my Patrol in its 20 or so years was a trip from near Hermansberg to Palm Valley.  The road/track wound in & out of the Finke River bed for much of its way.

There were a few sharp banks to negotiate when it left the river bed and some long stretches of sand or boulders.  I had to take the HR hitch bracket off the Patrol as it was digging into the rocks etc. and hanging me up.

Then there was the section, one of the few bits of water, where the road through the river was marked by a single strand of barbed wire on star pickets with bloody great boulders under the water.

Certainly no racing for us back in 2001.

It would be great to be out there with you.

We accidentally landed in Alice last year just in time for the Finke race. Fascinating seeing the range of vehicles doing the trip. We didn't see the race, but went out to Chambers Pillar the day after, and saw the track, or sections of it.

The winner last year did it from Alice to Finke on a motor bike in the morning, flew back to Alice and then did it in a car. The next day he did the same thing only Finke to Alice. Frommemory, he just missed winning the car event, but easily won the bike run. Now, Alice to Finke is about 280 km, and he did it in just over 2 hours! The section of track that I saw was so bumpy that I would not do more than 50 km/h, so elsewhere they must have really opened up the taps. I doff my hat to them all who do the race. I was talking to a bloke about 55 or 60 years old. He was doing it on his bike - the 10th time he had done it. I asked him how he felt about doing it again. He was excited, but he reckoned that after 2 hours on the bike he would be seriously questioning his sanity. He said it would take him about 5 hours each way.

An excellent event - I have seen enough of it for my liking now, but it is something that everyone should at least see where they go and the conditions they work under..

Day one done n dusted
Nathan Trigg is 1st in his class ( class 1 - 251cc and over 2 Stoke ) and 8th over all , not bad at all
Another local from Ouyen but living in Alice now
James Heenan ( class 5 -- 250 /450 four stroke ) is 10th in his class
The same class as Mylife's great nephew who is in 12th place ,
I might add that there is 148 riders in class 5
Let's hope tomorrow see them all improve their position but most of all that they return safe n sound .

I just meant regulation in general Mac - not just motor racing.

I've had a great dusty weekend.

I agree you should do it at least once - it was on my bucket list, hence me staying here when I wasn't even meant to be anywhere near here in the first place.

Glad your man got thru ok woody.
