We are travelling to Tassie with our little dog. I am very concerned about the 9 hr crossing and extra time for loading and unloading of our Ute and caravan on the Spirit of Tasmania. No access to our dog during the crossing and would really like some feedback from anyone who can explain the procedure of this worrisome part of our trip. Any advice would be welcome.
We travelled to Tassie a couple of years ago,it was a night crossing the only bit of advice we would give you is make sure your dog goes in the upper kennels as it could get a little wet from the other dogs .On the trip back we left her in the van after talking nicely to one of the loaders she was a lot better when we got back on the mainland, hope this helps

At one time you were able to leave your pets in the van but you had to sign a waiver.

Thanks for that - But I have read all relevant information from the Spirit site, I was hoping for some feedback on the condition of the kennels. 9 to 11 hours is a long time for my little old dog and I don't want him traumatised, but thanks anyway.
From memory the kennels ,are metal sides with a metal grill on the front and solid floor, there was different sized cages for larger and smaller dogs but staked on top of each other. They are placed in the walkway to the side of where the cars and vans are parked, hope this helps .
Thanks for the input Trevor, I did read somewhere in their T&C that if you leave your animal in your van you do so at your own risk and yes you have to sign a waiver so I am thinking I will pursue this line of thought. Their process seems a bit primitive to me.

Wow, I'm happy to report that a lovely young lady named Paige from Spirit of Tasmania answered my concerned inquiry immediately. If I sign the Indemnity And Release form my little man can travel in the caravan but no one will be able to check or water him. I am so relieved and will definitely make sure he has everything he needs! Thanks for the advice guys. : )
We travel across twice a year, and all our fur kids stay in the motorhome, yes we sign the waiver.
Far less worrying to have them in their own environment where they are warm and dry.
We also ensure out tickets are transferable, and if the weather is really bad (seas over 3 metres etc) we would postpone the crossing.
Tassie is a great place for spring, summer and Autumn just prepare the motorhome/caravan so that nothing can fall on the fur babies, put a few pee mats on the floor and do the trip.
That said if we had to use the crates we would fly them over and pick them up from the airport.
Thanks guys, we have made the crossing over successfully with a dream run, our little man had no dramas, slept on the lounge all the way! We also put down pee mats which he didn't even use - hope the return trip is as good!
