Big vans - big rigs

 How about this subject douge

If your van is over 30ft combined with your rig pay a bigger road tax.

The vans are getting bigger, so is there any limit.

Whoa!!! Hold the phone there Helen.

To suggest a further increase in Road Tax is like waving the RED FLAG at me.

We all pay enough for the right to use our roads.

My total rig is 13 metres long. And that is not huge by any measure.

I expect that you will get some flax over your opening remarks.

I will watch the outcome.

I think that limits you to a 14 foot van. biggrinbiggrin

My 14 footer has an overall length of 20 feet (includes draw bar and rear bumper / spare wheel carrier). Haven't measured my car yet but I'm sure its more than 10 feet. Combined length is close to or maybe over 30 feet.

It's basically the WEIGHT. that does the damage on road surfaces.
Specially when hot and sticky.

ALL Tandems should pay more. and ALL vehicles over 3 ton on it's 4 wheels also.
Plus More wheels. More Tax.

It's only fair.

OR. Put extra tax on fuel used, after a certain figure. Everybody have a fuel card.

MORE fuel in tank. More rubber on roads. More Maintenance.
More tax.

Come on then. Our poor destitute Politicians have to get their spending money from somewhere. Chuckle.

We all stopping smoking this last coupla decades.

Taxes have to be derived from other sources.

People  ARE already paying extra , bigger vehicle to tow = more fuel used . More tyres etc.

Saw a 34foot tri axle at Coffs last week & talked to a bloke , who had a wind deflector on his tug.

Reckoned it worked for him.

In NSW we are already paying a weight tax on caravans the same as we do for cars which results in us having the highest registration costs of any state (except maybe for the ACT). A caravan in NSW is already 4x higher than QLD and 8x higher than in Vic to register. For those who are suggesting a higher charge how about we have a national standard and use the NSW rate as the base after all "it's only fair" isn't it Macca ? Also a good idea about adding a tax on fuel in NSW we are paying a 3c a litre levee introduced to cover the cost of road maintenance. This tax was supposed to last for 3 years but has been around for many more years than that and like all taxes once introduced it will never be removed. Probably wouldn't be too bad if they actually did what they said i.e. spent the money on the roads but now it's just become part of their general revenue and could be spent on anything. It's bad enough governments coming up with new taxes without you guys suggesting ways for them to charge us even more.disbeliefdisbelief

Things are not equal at times , we have a ford dual cab and pay commercial toll rates , even though most larger SUV's weigh as much or more .

But they are charged a normal personal vehicle rate. The country roads aren't churned up by cars and caravans , its the 28 tonne on the back of a semi more so

Gday...

Like most people, I do not want to have to pay any more tax than I do now ... for anything. However, I have always, and still do, believe that as a community we should pay taxes to achieve infrastructure and services for the use and betterment of the whole community. It is the basis of democracy.

But consider this before this subject is further discussed and ideas/suggestions are floated.

I am quite probably a little out of date with the percentages, but less than 40% of revenue derived from the "motoring industry and users', goes to road maintenance and/or infrastructure.

If any other additional revenue is dragged out of the community it is unlikely it will find 100% of its way to the improvement of the road system and related infrastructure.

When the pollies - federal, state and local - get their hands out of the 'road maintenance revenue' and begin putting it all back into what it was originally intended for, then ... and ONLY then ... will I consider any change/increase to what I contribute to their coffers.

cheers - John

Helen,
I note you are from SA where you only pay a pittance in Registration, Stamp Duty on your vehicles and don't do annual RTA Inspections.

As BB said above; in NSW it costs just over $1000-00 to register a motor vehicle the size of my Patrol - nearly $800-00 for my van; then it costs $600 to insure car and a further $1100-00 for caravan insurance because I have a Sydney Post Code.
The Irony is: Most of my travelling is in SA, Vic, Qld, NT and a little in WA.

Sorry I think your call for higher charges is totally misguided.

hi Helen
the "limit" is 19m long, 4.3m high and 2.5m wide. My rig is at those limits confuse

The weight for a motorhomer is never going to be a problem for a vehicle engineered to carry what it was designed for. In our case its 21.5 tonne, I reckon we would go 12 or so on the bus, another 4 on the trailer.

Comes down to axle loading, the more axles the better, allow about 7 tonne each. Consider that next time you see a road train

Taxed according to a government who use more money than they give back, as usual.

pfft, a semi is a income-producing business, this is my house.
I reckon probably smaller, cheaper and leaves less of a footprint than most houses.
Consider that everyone on here is not on "holiday" when they are on the road

Spot on about the gummint there though Macka
