Shell-Coles Petrol Price Scam

Noted over this week whilst travelling city to country and return.

Most service stations ... BP; Caltex; etc price for Unlleaded was $135.9 .... Coles/She'll pre "discount" was $139.9 ..... To me this shows up the Coles/Shell 4c per litre discount is nothing but a SCAM .... This applies to outlets both in city and country .... Dishonest.

Yep, and even $1.35/9 is too much too.

Yep, my pet beef. Shell / Coles think we're all stupid.

IMO all petrol pricing is a scam. For years higher fuel prices in the country were justified as being due to the cost of freighting. We've done regular runs to a particular country town in Vic for the last 20 years and lately we've noticed the trend has reversed - those servo's we used to avoid in the country now seem to be consistently cheaper (often by a substantial amount) than their city counterparts. On the last two trips we left Melbourne with less than a full tank and filled up in the country!! How does that work??!!

We sure are. We have no one capable or powerful enough to represent our best interests. Useless politicians and greedy multi nationals are only interested, as you say, in lining their own pockets.

Our local Shell servo is always exactly 4c/ltr more expensive than the other four servos in our area, it has been for years. After redeeming your Coles 4c/ltr discount docket you're back to square one. A useless exercise really, don't you think?

W.Worths Caltex Servo seem to be that 3 cents lower than Coles Shell. Not sure what will happen when B.P, finally take over W.Worths servos.

We have found that the independent servo are always lower priced than others. Some times you can also get 4 cents off if that servo has an alliance with Super IGA. Now that is a good deal.

But which ever way you look at it we being conned asI will be the house on that fact that we priced have been inflated to coversame.

Once upon a time tere use to be the Prices Surveillance Authority ( PSA) different one.

Petrol prizes would come down if we all boycott one companie , they then would have to lower the prize . But it will never happen because people are to lazy and not smart enough , and THEY know it. Since the oil spill in the gulf of Mexico ,I have not bought a litre of petrol from this companie , ( has not helped to lower the prize.) Cheers

Been using United, Metro & APCO for about 12 months now. Certainly the cheapest and most stable around Ballarat. Seen up to $0.12 / litre for diesel difference on same day just kms apart saving the price of 2 beers on a tankful.

Hi Rusty

If everyone used the fuel app on their iPad or mobile phone, you can monitor the prices as you travel and take on fuel at the best prices available and even tell them you what you are doing. It just might sink in.

Doing this you can select where you take on fuel and support your preferred town.

How up-to-date is a fuel app and how is it updated? I thought about using it. However, fuel prices can change daily. Saving 4c / litre on 50 litres is just $2. Is that worth going out of one's way? Around home I just put about $20 in at the corner Shell when fuel light is on but fill up when passing a cheaper one (all about 5-10 kms from home). Travelling I fill up when necessary as cost is not always a factor if you are desperate.

What gets me is that in the big cities, petrol is cheaper than diesel by up to 10c / litre and in rural areas petrol is similar price but diesel can be 10c / litre cheaper than petrol.

G'day all

We've noticed this sort of stuff for years now - and it applies to ALL the shopper-docket supermarkets

For example - when we recently drove thru Sydney from Hornsby in the north to Liverpool in the south [along the old Cumberland Hwy, not the toll road] my missus wrote the fuel brand & price on a long list

EVERY coles & woolies fuel station was 1 to 4 cents higher than all the non-shopper docket stations, with many true-blue independents undercutting them by up to another 5 cents. So while the shopper docket places were offering diesel at around $1,30 a litre [less 4 cents], the independents were selling for $1,18 to $1,22 ...... still less than the big boys

Dunno how they do it, and we've used 'em for many years with no issues as to fuel quality etc. etc.

Hope this helps
Phil

Never ceases to amaze me, the number of oldies who feel they are being scammed, ripped off or otherwise cheated out of their cash, not so.

Get over it, learn to shop around, of course if it's down to laziness/convenience no room for complaint.wink

I can't see that its a scam - if you havn't got a docket  & you buy fuel there you will pay 4 cents more-  no one forces you to do business there.

I tend not to worry about it too much, I need fuel, I get it. If I get it a little cheaper next time, bonus.

The local radio stations announce each day where to find the cheapest fuel around the city, what amazes me is that people will go out of their way to drive 20 Klms just to get the cheaper fuel. I've calculated for me to do a 40km return journey across the city I would need to save around 10c/ltr just to break even on a 50ltr purchase. I tend to be more like Dougwe I couldn't care less about the Coles or Woolies 4c a litre discount I buy my fuel at the most convenient location sometimes it's cheaper sometimes it's not.

On my last two trips to Victoria (December to early Feb), & (March to early April), I bought fuel at two Coles-Shell servos only! And I have utilised a local Townsville one as they sold auto-gas & gave the discount for what it was worth. They have ceased selling gas now, so I won't be back again.
On the mentioned trips, there were differences of up to 11c a litre for diesel between some Coles-Shell & other brands in the same town.

I now either use United (Australian owned but have Indian staff), BP or Woolworths-Caltex. It's only BP & some United that sell gas now here. At Emerald, I use the Caltex as it's the easiest station to get into with a van on.

I gave them a reaming today!! Firstly it was the petrol scam....then the specials!!! (Trickster tactics in store).
The united here honours Coles and woolies shopper dockets - so as much as I'm against a company that won't even employ an Australian (and I don't mean ones that might have the ticket to be an Aussie (save your racist mail for someone who cares)) - it's hard to go past cheaper fuel....and a discount with no tricks to getting it.
Coles will have to give me a lot of vouchers before I'll go to one of those again. (Incidentally it was an import working there too - as said...save your hate mail for someone who cares....coz it ain't me).

All I'm saying is Coles don't get my fuel business.

Problem with United Fuel is they employ visa holders, 457 etc in their servos and have in the past been fined for underpaying staff just like 7/11 so for me if the company is not ethical they don't get my business. They also claim to employ 2500 Australians, but as most are visa holders I reckon that's a deceptive claim.

Good Luck.

I imagine they all do it , like Woolies/caltex and so on .

I use an app on my phone and watch the petrol cycle , around here its easy to save 30 cents a lt each fill up if you are able to wait for the right day .

Santa If you believe you are not being ripped off  that's fine but the Motoring organisations totally disagree with you they regularly comment on the rip off. as for laziness from us oldies in finding cheaper petrol there is as said by Belmont Bear absolutely no logic in driving around looking for cheaper fuel. The NRMA has an app which is set by the prices reported by the servos and does not rely on the public for input.

Both Woolworths and Coles are controlling the price of fuel in major cities and regional centres with 7/11 not offering any competition.

I have not purchased fuel from Coles or Woolworths in the last two years my preferred provider is United which are usually close to the 4 cent discount rate of the supermarkets and are an independent supplier who we really do need to support otherwise the big two will charge what ever they want.

If we have an option of the big players or an independent player I will always bypass the big two as the massive saving on dockets for 100 litres is less than the price of a coffee  and the independent is probably cheaper anyway.
