Probably should end up in Techies spot, but a good place to start with a wide audience. My Laptop of less than 4 years old died. Toshiba brand. If you have a Toshiba laptop, don't bother trying to get it repaired. They stopped production and support of any laptops mid 2016. I tried three outlets and two of them were Toshiba Warranty repairers. All three outlets all but laughed when I asked to get it fixed. I was told there was a 6 week recurring backlog order on spare parts!
Because of the nature of the batteries, I cannot even use it as a boat anchor!
My Toshiba Satellite is over 8 yo so I've been lucky. Good Guys still sell them - none at HN but over 600 new ones on Ebay so a lot of people are going to have service problems if they break down.

Gday...
I just chatted with my son ... computer tech in Mareeba unfortunately ... he was surprised by this ...
His comment -
"Well, ask him what's wrong with it - what parts did he need replacing, and the laptop model number and I can tell him how much the parts are. He could always mail it to me for repair."
His email is - info@nqce.com.au and phone number - 0408 139 528
Cheers - John

Partner has only ever had Toshiba laptops - reckons they were the best thing since sliced bread -he has had three of them, while I am still on my second laptop in about ten years - Hewlett Packard.
Playing up - took it to a computer guy - he had a look at it, said it was the battery the main problem - and they can't/don't have replacements/not replaceable!!!!!
. Not in manufacture any more - thanks a lot Toshiba for your fantastic (not) customer service.

I would not consider repairing a 4 year computer of any type. I don't consider yours as much of a loss. If you need parts they will cost a sizable percentage of a new computer.
What my friend would do is to pore a glass of water on it and claim on insurance.

Hey Jules, if you take the battery to somewhere like Battery World they might be able to rebuild it for you, inside the battery case is a series of common off the shelf lipo batteries, they just open the case & replace the batteries and put it back together. It's pretty simple really!, cost wise I'm not sure but I had a drill battery that I couldn't get a replacement for straightaway and they rebuilt it for me, it worked out less than a replacement from the manufacturer (which were out of stock).
Regards Steve.

Hi.I,m on my third too in how many yrs apart from resetting to factory a coupla times, and new keyboard.
Battery,s are just loaded with 18650 li ions, I strip them ffor torches and things.
Very easy to rebuild.
Do not ever buy Chinese cells. Rubbish. Panasonic, or cells with Pana, innards only
And unprotected.
Macka - Google "where are panasonic batteries made" Remember when they were called National and made great short wave radios and electrical appliances?
Dunno Macka - the Japan Times said back a few years :
OSAKA Panasonic Corp. has started production of lithium-ion batteries for mobile phones and personal computers at its new plant in Suzhou, China, the company said Tuesday.
It is Panasonics third integrated lithium-ion battery plant covering from component production to final assembly, following those in Wuxi, also in Jiangsu Province, and in Beijing.
Panasonic, which now produces most of its lithium-ion batteries in Japan, plans to expand Chinese production of the battery and have the three plants make 50 percent of its global output of the product by 2015 to reduce manufacturing costs.
It is considering transferring lithium-ion battery production to the new plant in Suzhou from its Kaizuka plant in Osaka Prefecture and closing that plant by next March.
Toshiba's are probably the best brand out there but 4 years is a long lifespan for a laptop. They can all be fixed and OEM or aftermarket parts are available but the cost of a couple of hours of Aussie labour may exceed the cost of a new replacement.
Many disposable (sub-$500) laptops are now being made that indeed do not have a removable/replaceable battery and are made out of a snap-together plastic shell like a mobile phone. When those type fail you chuck-em and buy a new one.
Laptops are a good 10 years behind the technology of desktop PCs for the same price. You are simply paying for miniaturisation. If you don't need to create anything but still want portability (what was the main niche for laptops), then this market space has been taken over by tablets.
If you don't need portability, buy a proper Desktop PC from a computer shop (not some cheaply made brand name from a chain store). They last longer, are upgradable, and are many times faster that a laptop.
As your post failed to specify, what exactly is wrong with your laptop?
My Toshiba's battery started dying after 6.5 years so I bought this one (a Lenovo). Build quality is not the same as the Toshiba.
The life of a laptop can be extended by using it on a firm surface allowing adequate ventilation (not a lap or a bed, as so many young people use them). Also when you turn them off, leave them for a few minutes before picking them up - to allow the HD time to stop. It is spinning at around 6500rpm during use & the clearances are minimal.

I have a Toshiba laptop. About 6 years old and going OK. Needs the rubbish cleaning out to get the speed back a bit. However better quality than most brands. I have purchased another battery from ebay last year. Works OK. When I leave it plugged in to the power all day at home I leave the old battery in it.
My sister has one too, probably older, and just had the hard drive replaced by the local Toshiba agent. He said there was no problem getting stuff to keep it going. Good for quite a few years yet so she spent the money and is happy too.
Both of us really use them as portable desk top machines, that I can take away when we go in the camper. So a desk top is not for me. I am happy to have a laptop and will keep it going.
Best thing to do with ANY laptop, OR PC.. is discard the HDD (drive ) from out of the back. and install a SSD (Solid state drive). They've come down a lot nowadays in price.
I also had a 2 terra external drive I coupled up to it.
My startup went from around a minute plus. to 14\18 seconds. From button push to moving mouse.
OS. Security and Net etc on SSD. ALL other prog's and items stored on External Hard. 7200 not 5400 disk speeds.
Reformat takes 20 min's plus reinstall. Whole computer is Turbocharged, then some. 16 gig RAM under bonnet.
But.. When I run it alongside Di's cheaper PC. Assembled for a grand by business comp systems dealer. Mine is a real snail..
Plus her build quality, Has to be seen to be believed. Everything segmented, compartmented.
Amazing quality, workmanship, when you stand alongside a Dell HP. whatever. 5 yrs. NEVER missed a beat.. SO far.
Have Tablet now. When this calks. Off to Mr Kerr for another box methink's.

Rubbish. 35 years in the trade, whoever told you that was talking out their @rse. I get parts from Toshiba all the time. Often small shops just want to sell new stuff. Perhaps they just didn't want to fix your laptop. Perhaps it was not worth their time to have to explain it to you. Perhaps it will probably cost as much to fix your ancient laptop as it would be to buy a new one.
Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps. Without you telling us what is wrong with it we can only speculate. I'd really like to help you out if you could say what needs fixing.
Macka17, just be aware that whilst SSDs are faster than magnetic drives, they have a finite number of read and write operations and in office use (eg, a few hours a day, 5 days a week) they usually fail in approx. 18 months to 2 years.
bought a branded Toshiba battery about 3 mnths ago - had a choice of cell numbers and took about 2 weeks to arrive. I just googled Toshiba batteries.
All the Techos have their own firm ideas, but many say not to constantly have your battery fitted into the laptop and run it on mains power without the batter fitted until it is needed

Hi can I digress a bit from batteries and give a tip re laptops. Some of you will already know this. They call them laptops but don't use them directly on your lap e.g. clothes or a bed or a table cloth but use them on a hard surface like a plastic stable table. When you operate them on your lap or other material you risk blocking the air flow to the fan also the fan sucks up fibres and in time will block up the air intake and you will find the laptop will only run for a short time overheat and shut down. I have cleaned a couple out and it was like pulling out a piece of felt.
