Pie in the Sky?

This is not a thread for those of you who are of the mind "Üser Pays"

We all say how travelling around is good for our health.   If that is the case. we must be saving the community a few dollars in health care bills whilst contributing a few more dollars to the towns we visit.   Must also keep us out of aged are homes for a longer period.

This has to be good for the taxpayers supporting us.

Disability pensioners get priority parking and I was wondering if there were any concessions that we could use to make it easier when we travel.

Perhaps all Visitor centres could allow us to fill our tanks with water.  I know there are some that do already.

10% off coffee and haircuts really don't do much for me.

What are your thoughts, is there some concession for aged pensioners that would assist you to travel?

Pie in the sky , or Pigs will fly suggestions welcome.  Just throwing it out there for discussion.

There could be some interesting answers coming out of your Tread MSG.

I'll start the ball rolling by suggesting a 50% discount by all fuel stations for Pensioners hold a Seniors card  LOL

Mmmm, maybe 50% discount for solo's in CVP's might bring us in a little more often. Instead of being charged for two people.

Now I am going to sit back with legs up, box of popcorn and a choc Top and read whatever follows, Mel.

That's a good one and quite valid. CP's are not likely to give away anything. PIS

Tax free fuel now that would be wonderful. Supermarkets to accept pension cards for 25% off, dream on, and of course Beer, wine and spirits on the medicare card. Purely medicinal of course. That's a good start.

Given my long association with pie I figured it would be prudent to check out the pie in the sky .............

At this point however I would need to research and consider any further contribution.......

CP's aren't likely to give anything away, after all don't we steal all their toilet paper, plugs and shower heads? That's what I've heard anyway.

Supermarkets: could be lobbied but that is not traveller specific.

Tax Fuel Discount: That's a good one. They are only collecting back what they have given in pensions. Likeswise GST and other taxes. TAX FREE FOR ALL PENSIONER PURCHASES !!! PWF

Oh. and along with beer & spirits for medicinal purposes, what about Mary Jane? I know there are some pensioners who might benefit and appreciate a discount.

Rocket. What a good idea. Especially National Parks. Wouldn't help me much I have a dog. Perhaps they could have pensioners camping with dog sections. Was looking at the Devils Marbles Campsite the other day. You can't camp if you have pets. Glad I visited before that came in. Though, I did have visions of the pet dingo that's there jumping out of the bushes and getting Molly.

Concessions for Self funded pensioners similar to those on welfare payments like Council Rate discounts, Power & Telephone costs, Govt bonus such as Electricity bonus to compensate for cost increases.

Know how you feel Possum. I was self funded for a few years until I spent all my money travelling. LOL. Then I went to being able to travel on a part pension. Now, with costs going up and more places charging fees I am eating into my capital again. May have to consider giving it away. The way things are going would be cheaper to stay at home with AirCon going full bore and just staring at four walls.  NEVER!

Here's a solution that's win-win.

You register with Centrelink as a homeowner or renter who wants to live in their caravan/motorhome for an extended period.

You must if a homeowner allow Centrelink to rent your unoccupied house for a fixed period at minimal rent....also forgo any council or electricity subsidies. This helps the housing shortage.

If renting you must forgo any rental assistance. This reduces the welfare bill.

In return Centrelink issue you with a electronic fuel card which allows you 100 litres of fuel a month duty and tax free.

Simple eh!

Good Luck.

Simple. But wouldn't work for me. Son lives here too. He's more valuable as a house sitter, maintenance man and security guard. lol Besides, I just might like him a little. I think those on rent assistance might get more than $100 a month. PWF

Hi Mel and gang

We visited a few SA country towns and discovered foodland offer 5% discount for pensioners on a certain day of the week. Now 5% is not a lot BUT much better than paying full tote.

I would love to see discount fuel, food, telstra etc. BTW I ask every place I shop if they give seniors a discount, amazing the number who will offer 10% when you ask. BBs offer discount to seniors. My attitude is if you dont ask you dont get.

Dont be afraid to ask for a discount especially if the business has close competitors, I generally say OK, I will see if they do down the road, gets me a discount most times as they dont want to lose a sale.. Then again Im a mean old Crock... lol

Asked at CPs... tight bunch that lot... Sometimes I get an ex serviceman discount, wearing my RAAF baseball cap often works.. Just ask.. They can only say no.

Hope you are well

Seriously..
Why should we get anything different to any others.
pensioners or otherwise.

We're NO different to any others.
Probably a bit more affluent than some,
to be able to do it, if you look at yourself.

THIS is our choice of lifestyle. Nobody elses.
Yep. I'm a pay your way.
I hate scrounging. Begging.

Do it. and pay for it. Or don't do it.
In my eyes.

I've travelled since 13 yrs. never looked for a handout yet.
Nor (hopefully)
ever will.

Travelling is a way of life to a lot of people.

Gday...

confusePARDON .... how on earth do you arrive at that conclusion. confuse

Not everyone is looking for 'discounts' or 'freebies' etc ... so if one voices an opinion that differs with yours it is a "slanging match". confuse

Sad really. no cry hmm

Cheers - John

Have been staying in caravan parks for the last month and mixing with people who are on the pension who feel lucky to live in Australia and be so well look after in their old age and happy with their life and not looking for hand outs all the time .

Here in W.A. us pensioners are offered 1 free trip return anywhere in the State per year by Public transport,

I think it's a pity this offer wasn't Nation wide as we would love to return to Tassie,

this would benefit the economy in Tassie as we would be spending our " hard earned " on food, fuel , and accommodation. the whole trip.

And not have to give most of our savings to the Shipping Mob, just to get there, although they would also benefit in the increase in travellers who would be buying meals, National Park passes, and other items to remember their trip by on board.

I know, just another "Pie in the Sky" but think what good this would do for Us and Tassie.

K.J.

I am a self funded retiree and will be for at least the next 6 years personally I don't want any assistance as I get satisfaction from knowing that I am still paying my own way. For those who have worked all their lives and are now struggling to make ends meet on the age pension good luck with whatever discounts that you manage to get. I have more of an issue with all the others who have their hands in the cookie jar and are far less deserving than the aged pensioners. MSG I have no problem with pensioners who are travelling coming up with ideas to reduce their costs as long as any increases in government assistance works out as being cost neutral as the bucket is empty - in fact they are already funding things out of someone else's bucket that our grandkids will have to pay off.

Dougwe not sure 50% discount is justified in a CP for a single as you are using a site that could be used by 2 people so they would lose money in peak periods - I believe what they should be doing is calculating the cost of power, water, cleaning etc. per person and then give you 50% of that as a discount.
