Cant comment on The Boulders, but I have been eaten at most places up here in NQ by midgies. I now apply my Dettol/babyoil mix daily, just in case, an d have been to the chemist for anti histamines and potions to stop the itch!
Coils and sandlewood incense help as well, the midges can get in through even the finest screens on your van. Wear long cotton happy pants with elastic at the ankle, long sleeve shirts.
Don't want to deter you, just be prepared!

DUNMOWIN is no longer on the road and still DUNMOWIN!
I use one of those Midgie net tents on Mandorah Beach when fishing.
They pretty gud.
Missus bought another one. cut the mesh panels out of it
with Soldering iron. and lays over us in beds.
IF they start to bother us.
Outside.
Dettol and Boby oil is old school. and good.
Better??.
would be "OFF" I've used it for around 10 yrs now.
Down where the Outriggers kept; they live under a 3 ft thick blanket of beach sand flies...
I walk through them.
You can see them parting to let you through and closing again Behind.
in front of following persons too.
A lot in club used it then,
I retired a few yrs ago at 68yrs. Don't know now.
we take it everywhere in Pump pack in car. Darwin. Brissie. Melb.
Seems to do good everywhere.
NOT as good on Mossies though. With NO smell I can sniff either.
Now look here, we have to have some "nasties" to keep the tourists at bay otherwise we'd be overrun with people seeking a perfect climate! Just bring up some water if you're coming to Townsville! If the sand flies don't get you, there's also a croc or two, sharks, nasty jellyfish, stinging plants, mozzies & of course the major one that most people ignore - the sun & skin cancers.
Either take Dunmowin's advice or have lots of vegemite on your sandwiches, etc as you'll be supporting an Australian industry too (it's been bought back).
And don't worry, they also bite us locals too.
Don't put off going to a nice place because something might make you a little uncomfortable - Slip, Slop, Slap, etc. If there's a bit of a breeze, it may keep some of them at bay. And be careful with waterways & crocs.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. We are actually from Mackay and we are in Townsville at present - and sorry didn't bring up any of our left over rain from Debbie. Had plenty of it - we had 600mm. We have lots of different deterrents but if they were really bad would prefer somewhere else we haven't stayed if the insects were less.
We left there a day ago after camping at the Boulders for 3 days and at the Babinda Rotary park for several and hardly say any but got bitten twice in all that time. So go there and don't forget the Airoguard. Early morning at the pool there you can watch the Platypus. A fantastic place.
Bru, what a beautiful picture!
More "southerners", oops "Mexicans" will be heading north now!
There are some fantastic places in the Tully-Babinda area - just need the repellent sometimes.
