Why would you want to buy an old petrol burning stove? That is what you want to buy, like the army used to use? Unless I have got the wrong thing on my mind, the choofer was a a thing of convenience for the army and should never be allowed in Public Hands! Sorry if I am wrong, the only other thing I can think of is Kerosene stove that required the kerosene to be vaporised prior to burning like the old blow torch. Like Aussie, a bit old! Sorry if I have it wrong.
JayDee, you are not very forthcoming regarding your location. If it was a little more specific I would know whether I could assist you. There are a few mens sheds that dabble in them.

A "Choofa" is what I call a gas bottle stove - I wasn't sure if you meant a "Smudge Pot" which I really should make one day :)
$250 is not a bad price for one - there is a fair bit of work goes into turning a gas bottle into a stove and at that price the hourly rate will not be high.
Unless you can find a secondhand one (unlikely) it's spend $250 or do it yourself.
