Mutawintji National Park

Hi, I am planning a trip in my motorhome, and want to drive from Broken Hill to Fowlers Gap on the Silver City Highway then turn off at Fowlers Gap and drive 75km on the Mutawinntji Road to the National Park "Homestead Creek Camping area after the Mutawintji Visitor Centre. Would anyone know if its a good road and suitable for a 2wd, quite low Avan Ovation Motorhome. I understand that its  2 hour drive, and not recommended if its had rain.
Hope someone can help.
Thanks
Colin

Great location but we'd have reservations with taking an Avan mobile home over that road. Yes, if it rains you're in real trouble. You only have to spit on the roads in that area & they're closed.

Your interior fittings are the same as our Avan Erin Mk2 caravan.

We've towed our caravan along some fairly rough stretches of unmade road at times.

We always find loose screws rolling around on the floor & one time a cupboard lock had sprung open, the knife & fork, utensil drawer had fallen out onto the floor.

Thats a bit concerning, so thanks. I suppose we could try and get a long range weather forecast ... its just that we want to experience some outback ...

Hi Colin.
We drove that route in October last year in company with a 4WD towing a 23ft caravan.
It could be dusty and it could be corrugated, depending on the recent traffic and grader timing, but I would not expect you to have any difficulties at all.
I would suggest that you reduce your tyre pressures by 20% and keep your speed under 65kph.
Great area.

Cheers,
Peter

If it is wet, they will close the road until it is dry enough that it is not unduly damaged.

If it is dry, it is generally just a good graded gravel road that any vehicle can drive on.  It does not require 4WD or even any significant ground clearance.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Colin
I was there last year, as long it not wet you will have no problems, Are you aware there is a locked past the camping area, you can only get in with a guide, I went out with a tour company so I'm not sure how to arrange it but I'm sure the info centre in Broken Hill can help, Its well worth going to the trouble.

There seems to be a few interesting National Parks around there, and I was wondering if this one would be the best one to visit  ??

I was thinking of going to Broken Hill first en-route to WA, so could visit more than one National Park there, but unsure which are the best, and the easiest in a 2 wd Motorhome
