Hi just wondering if anyone has tralleved the Barry way between jindabyne and suggan buggan with a off road caravan in the last 12 months? If so what are the conditions?
Pretty treacherous, & extremely winding. There are signs on both ends of that road north of Buchan & south of Jindabyne saying NO CARAVANS. Jacob's Ladder is a huge series of hair-pin beds descending to the Snowy River.
The surface is very slippery with a kind of sandy gravel! Some ''hero's'' have done it but they're idiots. On one occasion we almost went over a 1,000ft cliff at Black Mtn south of Suggan Buggan towing a small camper-trailer.
Very narrow & if you meet someone coming in the opposite direction, YOU'RE BUGGERED! Fantastic mountain views & the Snowy is awesome. We've done this road many times. We've seen this type of query on other forums & every time some idiot says it's OK to tow
a van along this road, it's illegal.

Firstly the nit picking - The Barry way is in NSW. The road becomes the Snowy River Way when it crosses the border.
The Barry way is a reasonable gravel road but the surface can be variable. I would tow a van of 18' down to the Vic border and across to Suggan Buggan. There are however a couple of jumpups along the Snowy River in amongst the stretch with the camping areas that would require a high concentration when negotiating. Once you pass Suggan Buggan the road width narrows considerable as you climb the long hill. There is a long drop on the eastern side of the road and a sheer cliff on the western side. I would not tow a van on this hill or suggest others do. The road surface is suitable for 2WD vehicles however. From the top of the hill the rest of the way south is mostly 2 lane bitumen.
There are a lot of horse properties on the Victorian side. They drive their trucks along the Snowy River Road to NSW. They drive as though they own the road. You could be in deep trouble if you encounter one of them on the big hill.
Google Maps have driven the Snowy River Road but not the Barry Way. You can look at the Vic end in Google street view.
