If you guys are referring to the Australian Motorhomes Park which is about 15kms north of Raymond Terrace why don't you check out their web sight to see what they have there. The fact that it always full would suggest that there could be something that is attracting people to use it. I have no affiliation with the place nor have I stayed there but for me if would probably be a fairly central location for the longer term stayer who wanted to use it as a base to explore the Lower Hunter, Port Stephens and the Newcastle areas with the bonus of having a reasonably large commercial centre only 15kms down the road.

This was not criticising, just wondering what the attraction was in the area for so many to be camped there. I noted it was opposite The Bucketts Way which I know is the start of adventures west.

Yes, I've also wondered about its attraction as we drove past.

But then an ageing relo used to come up from country Vic to Qld on a regular basis & always used to take a break at Raymond Terrace. Had a look in at RT on one trip & couldn't figure out what was the attraction there either.

So perhaps some use that CP as a stop over because it is on the highway & easy to get into.

I'll have a look at their web site to see what they offer .. not that we are likely to ever stop there .. not our sort of place, I think. We prefer water views. But who knows.

Edit ... Had a look at the web site & guess what, it does have a lake & good water views & seafood for sale ... reasonable kayaking too. So if it's not noisy from the highway it might be worth a closer look next time we are down that way.

The fact that it promotes drive through sites might suggest that it would suit overnighters.

Sorry guys if I misread the intent of these 3 posts but I took from them that you believed it was an unattractive place and the only reason you would want to stay there is because of "free beer". LLD your post at least offered a valid reason as to why it could be popular with so many people. I have modified my first post on the assumption that there was no intent to criticise the park itself which I believe would be a little unfair if you hadn't actually stayed there.

In the few times we've gone past we too have wondered what the attraction was and this topic promted me to look at their website to see what its about.

Rates seem reasonable and they are pet friendly, so that's our first main criteria taken care of. They also have a working fish farm and some other attractions. The fact they sell yabbies and silver perch might just be enough for me to give it a go when we're next down that way... haven't had a feed of yabbies for a long time.

Problem though is SWMBO doesn't like shelled seafood so cooking the yabbies in the van is out of the question, can hear it now.... "you're not cooking those xx##!!! things in here!". However, the ability to have camp fires on some sites might help resolve that issue, we're not that big on camp fires, but as a means to an end it's ok. So, perhaps the fresh "sea food" is the attraction along with what looks like a nicely managed and thought out park with no limitations on size of rigs.

With that last point, this could also be an ideal place for a reunion of friends who have big rigs.... Friends old and new around a campfire eating freshly cooked yabbies..... I'm there!

We stopped of there one night on the way North. Apart from convenient not a lot going for it my partner took a swim in the lake , but she will swim anywhere. Staff help

Have not heard much to recommend it. Most of those I have talked to that have stayed there think it is down market. It used to have a reputation of being too expensive but it does not look like they have raised their prices for some time which now puts it in a good comparison with the others that have.

I was talking to a bloke in EPIC, Canberra over the weekend. He was saying that he was there recently and the low cost accommodation mob have found it. There were many there that looked like they were permanent or semi-permanent. That may account for the patronage.
