Hi Chips 58,
Just as everyone has said that route is the best, however I'm sure what rig you have . But just be aware if you're in a motorhome and it's over 2.8 mt high you will be charged truck rates on the M7, very expensive. I live in Sydney and have to navigate back roads to get out of town.
Cheers
Greg

Yeah Chips . Sunday for me too . After you come up Mt Ousley . I take the Picton Rd to Hume , turn right onto Hume,
then take the M7. It is a toll road but it is the quickest way through Sydney at any time . Take Pennant Hills Rd to Wahroonga
Then onto fwy north.
Have a Safe trip.
Just done exact trip but opposite direction. Sunday definite but I've also done Saturday. Hardest bit is was going down Mt Ousley. Never gone up with a van. Do you have an e-tag? My Vic one works in all states so I don't have to worry.

DEpending on your preferences, the easiest way to get to Sydney from Merimbula is probably through Cooma, and then past Canberra Airport and then up the Hume Highway. But that is not a coastal route. The Princes Hwy North from Merimbula to around Geringong is appalling. After that, it is divided road to Sydney, until you hit the Southern suburbs - still divided but congested beyong belief. If you want to avoid the congestion, turn left just past Heathcote and go on the Heathcote road (Ring Road 6) until you get to Liverpool, and then pick up the M7 (toll road). Then you have to go on the M2 (another toll) for about 2 km and turn off onto Pennant Hills Road (more congestion - stay in the middle lane where the trucks are). After that, it is relatively free running until you get near Port Macquarrie. Then it is roadworks etc, but very pretty countryside.

agree with Patrick and others this is the easiest way to go. THe Pacific Hwy north of the first turnoff to Port Macquarie is one big construction site on and off all the way to Ballina. The sections completed are excellent however the areas still under construction are 80kph so watch the radar. We tend to use the New England Hwy while the Pacific is being upgraded When heading north. Enjoy your journey. Cheers,
Hi.
Sift out thr routes on here to get best one for your veh.
Then add to your navigator, the 7in 70 model is good basic Garmin unit.
Then input your departure point and arrival point directly into nav,
And compare the differences.
ME, I go straight up thr Newell, Leichardt, and Capricorn Highway.
Stay well away from that place altogether.
In third school term this year will be doing just what Chips 58 is doing.
My experience is that the Princess direct up from Woolongong to Sydney is a nightmare, even on Sundays. That's why I chose Picton Road last time.
Personally, driving the multi-lane highways is much more relaxing. No worries about holding up trucks etc. and the road is generally good. Newell has deteriorated and always have to be aware if you are holding someone up or you have a 80kph P-Plater in front that you just cannot get past.
