hi all we new to this caravan experience and would like to know is any one towing a 3500 gvt. Traveler Prodigy,or similar and what are you towing it with???
Welcome to the gang neck-end, enjoy here and out in the playground.
'gvt' is new to me as well, sorry, but sounds something the smaller tugs might struggle with so might be worth thinking along the lines of F250 or the small Iveco trucks or similar perhaps. Only my opinion.
Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

TUG.......2014 Holden LT Colorado Twin Cab Ute with Canopy
DEN....... 2014 "Chief" Arrow CV (with some changes)
The Toyota 200 ser. or latest Patrol G62 Petrol
But similar fuel usage to the 200 ser (so the tests say)
Possibly a Troopy with full cab and V8?.
Nothing in utes and SUV, Or so called other 4wd's
are man enough to safely tow that weight.
BIG utes. Around 2.5 ton max.
ALL of those above,
The van will control the tug when things go "whoops".
Primarily. Make sure the TUG is around 400kg or more
HEAVIER than the van you towing.
NEVER. EVER. Have a van heavier than your tug
Regardless of what the plates on individual veh's say.
Think SAFETY. FIRST. SECOND, and third.
Plus always get any Van you buy.
BEFORE.... You pay the money.
Taken over a weighbridge. Given a bridge. DATED ticket.
and have the COMPLIANCE plate on van
corresponding to weighbridge figures.
OTHERWISE...
S'Cuse me?????
You CAN NOTTTTTT.... Do anything once dollars paid. and van on your tug.
Regardless of what you try to say. That they said.
It's ALL up to you.
Do it right. Buy a van to suit YOUR tug. or change one of them to suit.
And you'll have great experiences.
Get it wrong.
You'll always be looking over your shoulder.
I know of one Personally, HE contacted me asking advice.
I Gave it.
He disregarded. And ending up changing both from memory
about 12 ish yrs ago now, he's on here.
PLUS.
Just remember.
Legally.
IF any of your weights are over. on either vehicle.
or combined is over.
The INSURANCE Company says who???/ Never heard of him.
He's illegal.
You've paid ALL those insurances for nothing. Car Contents and van.
Then Mr Plod says.
Helllooooooooo. what have we here then.
And don't think I'm joking. They getting (finally)
on the ball more. Nowadays.
It's normally a choice of buying a smaller van with less crap.
And coupla yrs down the track thinking.
Well.I didn't need all that after all.
3.5 ton van is a lot of weight. Size and bulk.
For what.
Think Before you jump.
And.... Enjoy whatever you buy.
It's a great life.
Hi there Yes we tow a Traveller Prodigy that has an ATM of 3380 kg with a VW Touareg 180 kw , 550 nm 3.0 diesel
the car has GCVM of 6,460 kg so can tow the full 3500 with no reduction in vehicle load
the only downside is that the current models have a reduced tow ball mass of 280 kg compared to the earlier ones of 350 kg.
i am now on my third Touareg and cannot find another vehicle to consider in the price range which is much cheaper than a similar speced Land Cruiser / Land Rover or even Jeep
The car does it effortlessly and with air suspension does ( cannot ) use WDH In my opinion one of the most underrated tow vehicles on the market Wider track and longer wheelbase than a LandCruiser 200 and with the electronic stability control on both car and Tucson on van absolutely no movement on the road

My two bobs worth yank tank or Iveco size if I were to be towing a full 3500 kg conventional trailer , I like my patrol but I wouldn't like to be towing that sort of weight with it .

I'm also a newbie, did put a post in the tech section re a McHitch, but watching and trying to pick up some tips and info. We have ordered a Traveller prodigy 23.6 with independent suspension with a 2 inch riser and ESC.
I'm towing with a F250 (Aussie,Brazilian) model I've had since new (2005).
We tow a Traveler Prodigy.with a 1999 land Rover 130 defender so far towed it about 40.000 klm with no problems.we have a gcvm of 7000 kg with 1.5 ton carrying capacity and 3.5 ton towing. we do not travel very fast as Defenders have a low rotio transfer box and towing in fith gear is not recomended. fuel consuption is normaly 14 to 17 lph. Landy

William, for a man who is new to caravanning you have chosen a van that mos old hands consider way to heavy for a newby. For new vanners the recommendation is you choose a van with a loaded weight to be less than the tare of the tug.
