my new van measures 18 foot four inches on the out side not including the draw bar or bumper bar, its called the 16 foot six inch model ,I said to the dealer what's going on ,oh we measure things from the inside now was his answer, that's stupidity to me, does that mean my four wheel drive is only six foot long Now seems a lot bigger when I put it in the garage
Vince the size of some of the sites in the van parks are so small a box trailer has to be manoeuvred and car unhitched - and they want a King's ransom for that.

There's some good points when we book the ferry for tassie with a six foot car and a 16 foot van it will save us a mint
Gday...
Sorry Ron.

[edit: PS - my van is a Nov 2008 build which I ordered in Aug 2008 ... it has always been described as a 21 ft 6 in van (and clearly states that is the INTERNAL measurement on ALL the paperwork. So it is not really a "new" way of measuring. ]

Yea.
Jayco just want to make people think they are getting more for their money
(More rubbish)
97% vans as long as I can remember (over 50 yrs) have been "internal" measurement.
Some did do Ext but not for long.
and then there's total,(inc Drawabar.)
So you have choice of three. Take your pick.
The 535 is 17 ft 10 in.
I'll have a look tomorrer as to whether that's inside or out?
I don't care, mine is a 13.42.2 which is big enough for me and not big enough after a feed of baked beans or corn beef, cabbage and mash, both of which I am partial to!! With regard to the closeness of other sites, I have found possums living within 3 metres of each other and they still fight, guess it is the nature of the beast. Other than that, I do have a 6 pack that is bordering on a very large wine cask which has been referred to as the third trimester? So, in time, I will be geriatric, which means, I have forgotten what I was going to say! Or did I just say that time as a measurement is relative to how much time you spend in your van, regardless of the size and enjoy it! Who cares how big it is, it is what you get out of it!
To me personally the outside dimension is the more useful figure ,just like cars the outside length is what we need to know with vehicles. Just a personal opinion!
For example how do you measure a motor home is it measured by the internal space of the box? measuring vehicles by the internal space seems a bit weird.
I notice in caravan magazines they quote external body lengths makes a lot of sense, that way you how the length of the thing that your towing, the lengh of the thing you have to fit into a space.when you step into your new Rv you can see how much room you have..it's a caravan or a motor home not a bloody lounge room

Jayco is one of the few that uses external body measurements to denote van sizes.
Dunno about other models, but mine (22.68-1) is measured internal body length.
(A quick straw-poll of a half-dozen vans on the Jayco website shows that using their specs for "interior length" fairly closely correlating with the model designation)

Aren't BOTH figures equally useful for different purposes?
How does the overall length, which might include a large rear bumper, extended drawbar etc - help identify the actual living space of the van? Equally, how does the living space help identify the overall length (eg for Spirit of Tas fees)?
