Thetford Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Is there an alternative product that can be used to clean a Thetford toilet bowl. That won't damage the seal. Thetford Toilet Bowl Cleaner is between $30 & $22 for a750ml bottle.

We simply use a spray and wipe type spray, and occasionally use a bit of olive oil on the seal. Our van is 7 years old and the seal is still fine. I would say any normal cleaner is fine, though I wouldn't use a strong bleach product. The Thetford product is in my opinion a rip off, about as needed as the ''special'" rv toilet paper.

Quick note on lubricating the seals....although there are 'non-Thetford' sources that recommend olive oil, Thetford state in their manuals:

"Note! Never use Vaseline or any vegetable oil. These may cause leakage."

Just hoping to help others avoid any potential issues in the future.

I use one of the "orange" type cleaners, works well. Keep it away from the seal, and always wipe over later with a piece of loo paper with some eaucalyptus oil on, then throw that in the cassette - nice smell.

 Funny you should say that.

I discussed this with the Thetford rep at a caravan show some time ago & he recommended using olive oil spray, something that I have done for 17 years with no leaks & the original seal.

I have always used the normal Harpic bowl cleaner without problems.

Fair enough :)  Just parroting what is in the owners manual.

(Personally - I use silicone spray lubricant)

Just a bit of olive oil. Eucalyptus smells nice too.

Those happy bowl liners are good.
I only ever had a drama with my seal once....when I used to wheel it on its own wheels. If you don't do that....seal will be fine.

X2.

Great those Happy Bowl liners .

A bit of eucalyptus oil now and then too.

5+1/2 years full time living in the van so far and no seal problems.

First I've heard of them, so I did a WEB search.

From the video at HBL site it seems that each time you use the loo you first drop in a liner.

I assume that it catches the business & deposits it in the tank when you flush.

Is that correct? How many liners in the $7.95 pack?

Yeah....just saves skid marks really. Especially handy when you're short on water.
50 in the packs I've got. But I bought a heap of boxes years ago....so I don't know if they come in the same configuration now.

Thanks for that.

Probably good for when I have grandkids staying over.

I use olive oil or silicon spray to make the bowl slippery & reduce skid marks but these would be better.

How about a toilet brush? You know - the traditional method for removing said "evidence" :)
