Apart from the climb out of Adelaide through the Adelaide Hills, sticking to the main highway is usually easy travelling

Out through the Barossa on the Sturt Hwy to the Riverland & then south from any of the points along the way is the flattest, but not the shortest. I did it via Mildura once, it was a long drive, but interesting.
