My past memories were that it was a very long day, great but i don't think I could manage it now I think we got back to the main land after 8pm

depends completely on the boat.
we used to sail down there for weekends and a week or two off occasionally.
Well worth the trip\visit.
No matter how you do it. They used to hire out mini mokes.

Beautiful little island.
and rough as **** on seaward side too.

I also went round there with mate on his Crayboat a few trips in the '70's\'80's.
Hiding in holes in cliff faces when blows came through.
Rings drilled\concreted into walls in good weather to hold bows out.
And a chopper collected Crays when he called for it if staying longer.
( good weather, Crays)
His 56 ft boat fitted where you'd swear you wouldn't get a 30fter.

From memory from Jervis, it's about an hrs run on ferry cat's.
But I haven't been there for over 15 yrs.

Hi Rocket.

Get up today departure times and travelling times on google. Lots of good information to be had.

It would be a great experience, anything like that is for the most worth the expence.

But this is a quick break down .The first ferry (drive on -drive off) leaves Cape Jervis at 9.00am and the trip takes approx 45 min
As for tours there are three (3) day tours
But the link will give you every thing that you need to know
If do do the day trip it is well worth it but can be a bit tiring

G'day mate, you've got all of the info you need re boat times etc from the above posts, what I'd add is that no way I'd do it as a day trip.

The first time I went, my other half had us booked in for 4 days. I was very unhappy, thinking "what the hell are we going to do for 4 days on the island?"

Well, after 4 days, we'd barely scratched the surface! Went back for another 4 days & still need to go back to see more of the island.

Don't listen to anyone who tells you that the seaward side of the island is rough, its not. Its all tar. There's tar all through the middle too & most of the north side.

There's dirt roads at both ends & through the national park.

Don't count on lots of shops/servo's - they're only really at Kingscote, Penneshaw, American River, Parndarna & the national park.

Lots & lots to see & do over there!

Two weeks a must, expensive but a fantastic experience. Missed things I wanted to do and want to go back. No free camping. West side the best and the fishing is great. Just do it! Most of the dirt is good. Loved it!

re ( No free camping.) I recall going down a very steep road on the North West to the water, I think and there was a free/low cost camp at the bottom. There was a road in and out both steep. Cannot recall the exact place.

Plenty of cheap camping though. I did note one free camp on the eastern end in WikiCamps but that may be an error.
