Peter, there is some discussion on CF about Crank Ups, I personally would pay the extra up to $2999( Vansat) to get an auto unit with receiver. I have seen cheaper setup as well. We use a oval 80/90 dish on the front of our caravan A frame, but do not tend to do the setup for an over nighters, so if had room on the roof would probably install an auto dish.

I have a Saturn TV aerial the previous owner connected to a Wingard Crank up system. Works well but not Satellite. We cannot buy the US conversion system here.( Commercial Considerations)

I am considering getting a relative buy a rooftop conversion to Satellite Dish from the USA site of Wingard. Cost $265 US. All I have to do is use my LNB from my dish.

We don't bother with tv anymore. ALL crap.

But when travelling we had a full size dish
which fitted on a length of 1 1\4 tube stainless and a coupla clamps

Mounted on drawbar in front of bottles

.Raise lower and swivel to suit.

Elevation\bearing charts off net, and sat finder.
Box, and cable going into van.

Took around 5 min's or so to set up and elevation rarely needed changing much as you travelled North.

Also had a Heavy duty Jaycar speaker stand to mount it on with long cable when moving it around for trees etc.

Foxtel dish\LNB. Gratis.
Jaycar stand $140.
finder $35ish.
Sat box, around $260.
Cable\fittings $60.
Bit of patience... Freebee.

Apart from Footie (Rugby) I have yet to find anything worth on TV nowadays.
Just take movies and TV series on 2 Terra Hard and coupla 32gig chips.
32in teev.and wireless earphones.

Dish sits under rear deck out the back. Just in case.

I understand that US Sat dishes can be as small as 45cm and still work well. The NZ dishes maybe 65cm and OK for NZ and probably for the East Coast of Oz, I think most of the auto sat dishes are 75cm+ to me the bigger dish can better cope with some wind movement. Our big dish still works well in heavy rain without loss of signal.

We tried most sizes and shapes over the yrs.
Found that mainly.
the full size round dish gave best reception to LNB over most of the country.

Meant that they still work well in the US, ( to small for OZ) as I understand the US has a more powerfull sat signal over there.

I agree, a sat dish for Aus needs to be a minimum of 75-80cm to gather enough signal for all but the east coast. Along that coast a 60cm will do.

Hi Chopper, we have a sat dish called Maxview Precision, it does exactly what the crank up does but the price is $550, we also soul searched over the Crank Up, but the Maxview Precision is absolutely brilliant we can set it up and watching telly in 5 minutes flat, never ever have we been unable to lock onto a satellite in under 40 seconds, just ask Dougwe as he saw me set it up at Greens Lake

Hi Peter,

When I was considering dishes for my TV I spoke to John at Satplus and his suggestion for adjusting the LNB on the Crank Up was to face the dish toward the eddge of the van and then lower it so that it can be reached from the side and then perform the adjustment.

He also mentioned that the position may vary considerably from van to van and some have set the dish position so the LNB may be accessed from through a hatch.

I eventually opted for a dish on a tripod and have a bracket to mount it to either end of my van as well if suitable.

Hi team,, Am at present perusing the crank up from John at Satplus.. His response on our last visit to his facility was to wait a bit as there was a new version of the manual system in test mode, and possible release early in this year. He did say however that the new addition had a automatic LNB adjustment... What sort,,of method he refrained from commenting,, as it is in test.. He has me on his reply list,, when some information comes available Personally i like the unit he showed me,,All steel gear box,,simple but well constructed components,, NO high tech electronics to fail.. I am in no rush to change as i have a ground mount that works fine,,but this could be an alternative....Wait and SEE.
