Kanagaroo Island

In particular we were hoping to get some feed-back on the caravan parks but any tips, suggestions, comments would be greatly appreciated = PLEEEEEEESE.

hmmThanks    Roy

Watch out for the ferry fees ! Humongous.

It's a great place with great scenery. We've been there a few times and loved it each time. The ferry fees are very high. I know that people of KI have been trying to get the Federal Government to classify it as a National Highway and then it would be subsided as is the Bass Strait Crossing.

Have a look here. I think it will cover everything you need.

We did not go there when we were in the area because we did not know much about the place at the time and the ferry fees were over the top, but we were camped next to a guy and his misses who were going to put there van in storage nearby at very reasonable rates, and take the car across and stay in the motel and explore the place that way, if we go there again in the future we will do the same....

We have relatives that live on the ''island'' which is basically an extension of the Fleurieu Peninsula separated by a small stretch of water. The ferry costs a mint the scenery is mostly farmland except for the rugged National Park end. There are no ''free camps'' & things are quite expensive. Why bother unless you have to?

Hi, not sure how much the fees are now as it has been some years since we have been. we really enjoyed our two weeks there. it is the sort of place to slow down ,relax near a beach, throw in a fishing rod, walk the beaches. Take a slow drive around the island starting at Penneshaw. yes most of the inland is farming but the coast is beautiful. stay at Stokes Bay, Emu Bay, Flinders Chase National Park. Remarkable Rocks is a great day out. Seal Bay is now controlled by parks and wildlife but certainly worth a trip. Cape Willoughby and Antechamber Bay are great spots also. we had campertrailer so just check access via wikicamps if you are in a van. Also take it easy on the dirt roads, lots of little round stones which makes the roads very dangerous on bends.

hope you go and enjoy.

cheers steve

Loved it, took our camper trailer over, spent nearly two weeks. Western side of the island is the best. Just do it! Fees, cost, and all that, you only live once and you will see things you will not see anywhere else.

I have been over to KI several times & have Loved it . You just wind back a couple of notches.

AS Lance said & how often are you going to get to such a Great place . Usually the ferry has a

bit of a discount on vans . IF you stay sever nights at the van parks , check for any specials.

Talking to a friend on KI , he says there is talk of another mob coming out of Port Adelaide to

Kingscote . I hope it goes ahead , as the traffic going up & down th South road is a shocker.

Yep it will cost you . Just GO . You won't regret it.

No Free camps and quite expensive! Now there is a good reason not to go!

If they were criteria, why go to much of the country.

For a quick trip we found a tour was the go. We got a bus from Goolwa in the morning, got on the Island for lunch. We were met by the people from the hostel in Penneshaw, spent the afternoon walking around town and the Baudin NP and the penguin parade at night. The following day we went on a bus tour to the far end of the Island and took the ferry back to the mainland just after dark and bus back to Goolwa. There were 2 and 3 day tours on offer as well at the time. May be the way to get a taste of the island.

Leave the van elsewhere & just go.

The island is very unique.

When we 1st went, I thought "why are we going for a week?"

That was 17 years ago, we thoroughly enjoyed our week & went back about 6 years ago.

We're very ready to go again.

Its not cheap, but its a lot cheaper than the East Coast!

This is my opinion and no one else's. My opinion is to see a unique place it is worth the money. It is also worth the money to stay at the most expensive caravan park in Adelaide to be close to family rather than drive through the traffic! KI is a great place and I know even though I have been, I will spend the money to go back. They say a fool and his money is easily parted, in answer to that, I am not here for a long time and would rather die destitute than leave it to the relatives who are a lot younger and between them would not be able to light a camp fire because of all the infernal electronic must haves and no bush sense!
Just go and enjoy Kangaroo Island and I am sorry if any one is ruffled by what I have said, because I don't care.
Kangaroo Island has many attractions that don't cost money and can be done on a budget.

Hmmm, perhaps a case of familiarity building contempt, however I really don't see the attraction.

Living in SA have visited KI a couple of times, wouldn't bother going back, as others have commented, expensive, difficult to get to and has little that cant be seen elsewhere, for a lot less money.smile

Hmmmm, I live in SA and I think it is a place worthwhile visiting.

Remarkable Rocks, Seal Bay, Admirals Arch for NZ fur seals, American River, Flinders Chase (look for a platypus or two or three), American River, The Eucalyptus Still, the purest bees in the world and so the purest honey, great beaches and Kelly Caves not to mention good food and wine all sourced from the area.

Thanks everybody for the information on Kangaroo Island. I appreciate you all taking the time to give me your views.
We will definitely be going on June of this year - we love the cold and wind - just have to make up our minds about taking the van or doing the tours. Cheers everybody. Roy
