I have an intermittent issue with the van brakes. Van is quite new and has only travelled a few thousand kms. The problem has only appeared recently.
Sometimes after braking the van brakes remain on and squeal loudly. So far I have used the technique of stopping and reversing a couple of inches to release them. That's OK out in the country but if I ever have the problem in a busy area it could be a worry.
Controller is a Hayes.
Have not yet tried re-calibrating the controller. Is that the the next logical step? Any other suggestions welcome.
Hi Moose, When I bought my van, I had to get trailer brakes installed on the car. The salesman went for a drive with me and set the brakes at the right level. After towing for about 800km, they suddenly started behaving as you described. It was terrifying. I got out the instruction page and it said something about the brakes needing to be readjusted after a time. I then set them a lot lower and they were fine and have been ever since. Your problem may be more serious but just thought I'd relate my experience as your brakes may also be new. (like your van) NH
we had a similar problem when I checked the brake drums were out of round and I had to have them machined. I have also found some of the cheaper (chinese) brake units do not have good quality linings. if they are alko they should be ok.
You may have them calibrated on to highway setting,if there not proportional like the red arc system what's calibrated for the highway braking, will be to severe for the city,And they will definitely lock on at times,Before We had the new system fitted I always had to adjust them manually For different traffic situations to avoid them locking on to a certain extent...
hi moose,
before you go spending money,, remove the drums and check that the brake shoes have a beveled leading edge. if not use a file or angle grinder and bevel both ends of the shoes (linings).. if there is no bevel it causes the brakes to drag and stay on until the wheel stops turning , then they fall back.
I had that problem with my van which was new at the time ,jayco fixed it up on the driveway while I watched and I was back on the road in 20 min
Check the chassi documents. Mine was due a free service after 600 km. Including brakes.
In the mean time suggest you re calibrate and try adjusting the controller. Then ta,e it for a short drive with some brake use, around town would be good, then pull over and feel all the drums. They should be hot and all the same temperature. Hot , working, cold is not working. If they vary greatly something is wrong. Might just be adjustment or the controller may not be compatable or fitted correctly. Some controllers need to be oriented in the correct direction too.
If you still have the problem after calibrating, go back to where you bought the van. It is currently un roadworthy.
I would not take the drums off, it might voide warrantee.
The only real way to check if they are working is the feel test after some use. Obviously dont get burnt.
