Running out of firewood - no wonder!

Hi All,

Just like to make a comment re campfires.  It amazes me wherever we go to set up camp there is almost always someone who sets a fire that would power a small town.

I just don't understand why people have to have a huge fire, they start off sitting in a group around the fire pit then as it builds to a huge inferno they are all shouting to each other because they've

moved so far apart to escape the searing heat!  Honestly, some "campfires" (read "infernos") I have seen would use more wood in one night than I use in a year.

So when it is really cold (the only time I bother with a fire) I go looking for a bit of fallen timber to light a small discreet fire, can't find any.......... Running out of firewood - no wonder!

Hi Vince,

We love to free camp. Yes you will see the odd D Head. We will only gather kinder to get our Fire going with a cap of kero.

We have a van with an extended A Frame to which, we have fitted a 1200 x 900mm car roof basket for the specific purpose of carrying the best mally and WA Jarra hardwood used sleepers. We are recyclers of used timbers.

Our Camp oven gets a work out most nights. We make late afternoon (happy hour) dampers to die for, Most go home and forget dinner total, the folks just keep coming like bees to our honey pot.

Then come's slow roast pork, Chicken, lamb shanks. You name it and I can cook it. All on a 900 x 2 cut used sleeper. The coals will keep us warm till ningh nights.

Life is good in retirement done right.

Hey Jim,  When will you be back in the West, ???

We also love to Bush Camp and are very keen to try your Damper, I've tried to make some in the past, but it always comes out tasting like sour dough !!

Happy travels  K.J.

Jim,

Sounds like you should produce a book with your cooking menus and instructions for campers!  By the way, I purchased the chainsaw and very happy with it. Thanks for the advice.

Hi Kiwijims,

I work with 3 level cups of self raising flour one cup of lemonade ( Yes Lemonade / fizzy or flat ) 1/3 cup of dried fruit. When mixed (Let IT sit for 15minutes )before placing in your camp oven. I use the lid as a template to cut a sheet of Oven Bake on the bottom of the oven.Saves mess Cook for 20 mins max. Use your shovel to place coals on your lid NO FLAME.

I have two ovens 4.5lt & 9lt. some stops we use both.

Eaten hot with Margo spread over. Yummy!

I make them with diced Black /green  olives, Thin sliced Pumpkin, shredded tasty Cheese Plus sprinkle a little cheese on top just to show Off.

Just remember to keep ingredients as dry as you can.

1.If your damper sticks to your hands, flour your hands not the damper.

2 If your damper is to dry, just add small amounts of lemonade at a time

We will be back in the West in April.

Sorry for getting of the Topic but I love to Cook.

Jim

oh and back on the subject of firewood - Bunnings no longer sell cut firewood. If you buy it from a Servo, they typically buy a certain amount which costs them $68 - when they sell it retail. the same amount of wood nets the Servo almost $1700 !!!! Not bad profit, huh (my wife runs a Servo).

Maybe we should all become little wood choppers and start undercutting the Servos. They well heaps in the summer as well for the sissies who need a wood burner when they have a cool night and for the many wood fire BBQ's that are still around.

G'day Vince

Couldn't agree more.

I'm in  4WD club and some members insist on huge fires. Bloody stupid.  Whenever I ran a trip I insisted on a small fire suitable for cooking and sitting around. Boy did I cop some flak from some of them, but I was the trip leader so they had to put up with it, just as I had to when I attended a trip with one of the big fire trip leaders.

There is just no need for huge fires when camping.

Great idea Bruce, we'll be in that for sure, even bring our own plates for a good damper,  LOL

Back on to the subject,  I can't understand why  people must  light a huge fire late at night, after arriving at a camp site when everyone else has long since had their evening meal and hit the sack.

We experienced this at one place in the N.T. it must have been 10.30 - 11.00 pm when a mob turned up in a Zip Banger ( a van with sliding doors ) 3 or 4 of them, all wearing very bright head lamps,  started running round gathering wood by breaking branches off trees,

Within a short time they had a massive fire going, which lit up the whole camp, I woke up to see this huge fire blazing away, But not a soul in sight !!!  the twits must have been worn out getting the fire going, then went to bed leaving the fire  unattended.  confuse no

K.J.

Jim - When are you going to come south in WA - or even near Perth???? Not sure where KJ is based......

On the subject of big fires - it seems to be a man thing - bigger is better haha.....but I get really peed when I see people breaking off branches from growing plants and bushes. I will usually go out and have a chat with them about it and how if everyone does the same, we will have no bush and trees in the free camp areas - just weeds or dust
