Wow, what a disaster. I really feel for the people, not only for the loss of their van, but also for the loss of their family dog.
I hope they were adequately insured.
We drove through the showgrounds in Toowoomba last Saturday week to have a look and thinking about staying there.
We had booked into a CP in town and were deciding if to stay another night in Toowoomba at the showgrounds. But we decided to move on further down the track.
Its one of the things that terrify me and the main reason I don't leave my dog in the van alone. Can be a bit restrictive though. Very difficult to go get the shopping. I turn everything off so there is no drain on the battery at all and I just dash in and out again. I will add she never makes a sound and is most secure and comfortable there but it always worries me. No matter how careful you are there is always the chance something can go wrong.
sad to see a family member who was no doubt so precious to these folks die.
Our dog accompanies us in the ute when we go out and if not in the back seat, pretends to drive it while we are parked.
We have the windows part down for him and he seems vicious enough to a casual by passer that no-one would try putting their hands though the windows (although he thinks every complete stranger is his best mate)
If he isn't allowed into a shop (Bunnings and many others allow you to take dogs inside nowdays) and its too hot - one of us takes him for a walk in a local park while the other does the shopping

The amazing things you see when nomading Australia
The caravan can be replaced, but the dog is gone forever
I hope that they find the cause of the fire, so that we can all learn from it, as it is strange that a fire starts in a battery box
As a side note about dogs and caravan fires
Back in 2008 there was a picture in an exercise room, of Royal Perth Hospital It showed a burnt out caravan, a burnt man, and a newspaper article saying what happened
I became friendly with this man as we were both exercising for burn rehabilitation
He said that in the middle of the night, he had gone outside for a smoke, his dog had jumped up thinking that it was also going out
The dog must have accidentally switched on a gas switch, as he walked back inside to butt out his cigarette, the caravan exploded
Tony Bev; battery box fires normally caused by voltage regulators (Normally Asian origins), failing on chargers, so too much current put into battery/s, battery overheats and is contained in cheap plastic battery box (normally Asian origins) Recipe for disaster.

Thanks for that explanation Possum, it is appreciated
I had read that the el cheapo regulators fail, not being an electrician, I had assumed that they failed by wearing out and stopped charging
