Working your way around the big lap

Has anyone worked (or volunteered) there way around while travelling. I notice a few positions both paid and unpaid on this site and wonder what experiences other people have had doing this, I believe it would be a great way to learn the local culture and characters in the district you are staying in. What do other people think

Ohh hell no . Leave that to Forrest Gump etc ., Actually I found cyclers and walkers to be VERY dangerous on WA , outback main roads . I came accros a few on corners . Yes out of 40,000 klrs I found a few on bends .. Sheesh ! The main road up there is wide enough in some places for one heavy vehicle !!

We had 5 years doing that, decided before we left Tassie we would spend roughly 6 months in a place we found a bit of work and enjoyed. Ended up with 12 months in Albany, 12 months in Perth, 2 years in brome and a further 12 months in Perth but I spent a lot of that working jobs in the mid south west doing grain work whilst the wife work in Perth. The original intention was to go east from broome but my daughter had our first grand daughter so we went south again. Getting itchy feet again to head to broome again and head east but my daughter now has number 2 brewing. Found work not as plentiful in years 4 and 5 as 1 2 and 3. But that's the way the economy went
cheers

 Hi Martin

For 43 years I tried working my round Australia, it got so exhausting I gave it up driving large transports for work, got to seen most of the eastern states, South Aust. across to Perth. Now realise that was xxxxx hard work keeping in front of the law and bosses.

Now just cruise around in our caravan with out a care in the world.

Sorry to hear that. Any idea what it is. You don't have to say but what I mean is I hope it's under control. And even better still I hope it goes away so you get back out there

No comment on the swollen crutch  ... may be unrelated to the other issues.

Get well soon ..

When we were on the road full time we did a bit of WWOOFING(Willing Workers on Organic Farms)(google it) For example, we stayed on one small 2 acre property just outside of Perth for a couple of months to waste time till the rainy season ended so we could travel north. We just did any odd jobs they wanted from repairing the kids bikes  and other simple stuff to gardening and even sorting bins of mixed bolts and screws. but you could end up doing anything from grape vine care to fruit picking to cattle work. Young people do it mainly but I think they appreciate the more mature workers for their reliability

We also did caretaking of a tiny police museum at Timber Creek in NT for 3 weeks which was great. It was in a peaceful setting without another building in site just the museum which was an old queenslander house that was the original police stn, & of course an outdoor dunny. We set up our caravan and they supplied power and water and we just opened the place up and greeted guests collecting a gold coin donation and kept the place tidy. We recieved anywhere between 2 and 20 tourists a day so had most of the time to ourselves.

We house sat a a farm on a 100km X 90Km property near Mt Magnet WA for a couple of weeks. It paid $100 a day and all we did was water the gardens surrounding the house, feed the dogs and the potty calf. We were suppose to check the dams which were scattered throughout the property but it poured rain before we got there so we didn't need to do that. (we were thankful for that as it's possible we could have got ourselves lost the place was so big. They even supplied a sat phone just incase :).

We were also nanny for 3 kids for a few weeks but that wasn't a great experience as one of the parents had a bit of an 'attitude' which hardly made it worth the money.

There is work if you look for it. Ask in the towns or other travellers or on the forums or check the appropriate web sites.

Happy travelling.

Jon

Thanks Hylda&Jon we are looking forward to experiences like that (except the nanny thing), I have worked on sheep and cattle stations in the past and love that type of work and we are hoping to mix that with q bit of propecting.

Thanks once again

Martin
