Buy a length of the alloy awning track. Fix to side of van. length is what would suit your Van
Buy some ripstop nylon and get some bungee cord sewn along one edge. Make the measurement of the nylon around two feet shorter than the track. Get some rope stops to suit from a boat accessory place and put one at each end of the bungee cord so when you have feed the nylon through the track you have some tension on the bungee cord.
A seam all the way round and two grommets for a tent pole on the two corners with two guy ropes. Five mins set up and the nylon folds up very small.
It will be hard to fix the awning track to canvas. The options would be to have an awning made that could Velcro to the side canvas, or fit an awning to your vehicle which when parked could extend over the kitchen.

Just had a look at cub supramatic regal and now understand the problem.
Grompytoo's solution sounds like a good one.
Of course, you could always switch over to a caravan with awning. (Just joking)

Yes, people should get to know the situation before they put their mouth into gear. Here is the camper
People I have seen using these campers leave the top of the annex zipped to the camper. when breaking camp they throw the awning top over the top of the main body of the camper before folding it up. When they get to the next site they unfold the camper, pull the awning top into place and support it with 3 poles, ropes and pegs.
