We wonder why some free camps get closed

While staying at the beautifully maintained free camp at Jerrys Plains NSW  the sign on entrance states no dogs, a nice Motor home arrives and out jumps 3 dogs, the nice clean well equiped toilet block where the sign says please do not use as a dump point so out comes the cassette from the Motor home and emptied in to the toilet! Backpackers? Not bloody likely but well heeled grey nomads. I am not opposed to dogs and have been travelling with mine until very recently until I lost them due to illness but rules are rules and we all need to respect them. These inconsiderates ruin it for all of us.

I agree .. BUT ., looking from another point of view . If cassette had no chemicals ? In it ?? Would possibly be fine . Much better than dropping on side of road . I've dug 300mm hole and slowly emptied . Back filling very carefully . Away from water or streams . The dogs yes . Especially 3 of them .. Where they behaved ? I mean just because rules are rules and I agree ! Be careful you don't become an old winging nark either ! Lol

Yes Aus-Kiwi, the toilet may have no chemicals, the dogs may be the best behaved in the world, but unfortunately it is still not acceptable.

I am afraid if those are the rules, work with them, whether you agree with them or not.

As travellers, we cannot afford to give authorities any reason to close these sort of facilities down.

For what it's worth Footprints, I agree with you and also get annoyed with those that consider themselves to not have to comply with local rules. There again, perhaps I am also just a whinging old nark.

Some people think that if their dog is well behaved there is no need to tie them up. Unfortunately these people do not realise that their dogs poop & pee of everything, especially when they immediately get out of the car. Met a chap recently who had no concept of this at all. He complained that people don't like his dogs off-leash even though they are "good" dogs. I said they pee & poop on other people's stuff. It didn't sink in at all.

It was a dog friendly stop over but now has changed. People just cant understand the rules, seems the same for No Camping at Rest Stops.
Jerrys Plains is only a Septic system so those with cassettes need to heed what the rules are. So many people with chemicals in their cassettes still dump in long drops and Septic systems, this will kill all the bacteria developed to reduce the waste.

My understanding is there are two chemicals for a van loo. One is supposed to be septic & long drop friendly, the other not. I only use the septic friendly but to date have only used a proper black-water disposal other than one time when I dug a big, big hole and refilled it - carefully.

I ask a question here

Is there not a law against people putting the contents of their cassette into a dry type drop toilet, or any toilet with a sign forbidding it
If there is, then we should have every right to at least scare these people, by telling them we have their rego number, and will be dobbing them in, if they disregard this rule

I quite agree that rules are for everyone, and can only suggest that those who are going to disregard them, are only Grey Nomads in name only

Not wanting to debate the pros and cons, the point that I was making was after talking with one of the locals nearby about who maintains the site so well, voluntarily that it is incidents like the one mentioned that cause a rethink on providing such a place for our benefit as very few actually spend in this little town preferring to spend in nearby larger centres.

We were at one a couple of weeks ago and someone dropped their kitty litter tray full of dodos. Right where next people would park their van.

I would take a photo of thee vehicle and reg number and present it to the local authority. This kind of behaviour needs stamping out. Camps 8 gives all the dump points so there is no excuse.

Sorry, but disagree with you completely.

Does not matter what chemicals are in it, if it says do not dump. then DO NOT DUMP.

I do not give a rats how well behaved the dogs are. IF IT SAYS NO DOGS THEN IT MEANS NO DOGS!!!!!

Or, another way of putting it would be, too many people who have no idea of what they are talking about are only too quick to speak up.

Free camp sites are a "PRIVILEDGE" not a rite and the rules should never be abused. This is not the Grey Nomads age of entitlement. Fair go...the same people will bitch when the free camp site get shut down due to inconsiderate travellers. Local Councils (and local ratepayers) pay for the installation and upkeep of these sites and services, no doubt for return economically to the district.

I'm a still trying to work out what the No Camping at Rest Stops in NSW means? Apparently it means you "can" camp but not for too long?

When traveling we stop every 2 hours for a rest in a rest area at the the end of the day you vamp at a camp site not a rest area , If you look at a Camps book it show which is a rest area and which is an overnight camp spot .

Ever come across a blocked toilet because someone emptied their cassette and it was too much volume for the toilet? I have, not a good look!

We are camped outside a unit that we are cleaning out and renovating. We empty our cassette in the toilet in the unit toilet (liquid and paper only). This works for us but I would not do so in someone else's toilet as there is a tendency to splash.

If used for both needs, there would be considerable more splashing and clogging unless multiple partial dumps then flushing is done.

Travellers should stick to dump points as the entry is much larger than a toilet.

We were at Kandanger Qld only a few weeks ago, and I saw a guy taking his cassete over to the toilets to empty it. I pointed out to him the Kandanger RV brochure that advises where the nearest local dump points and said to him "I pretty sure they don't want people dumping their cassetes in the loos here, we've all got to do the right thing to keep these free camps open and abide by the rules".

He replied with "What are you the dunny police..... Won't bother me mate, this is my last trip".  Rather than get into an arguement with an A$$H0## who only cares about himself,  I wrote down his van & tug rego and left a note in the donation box just in case he was staying longer.

Would have loved to be a fly on the wall if he was still there when the caretakers there read the note.

My concern is what these grubs will do with it if they don't ? I don't have a gazett toilet ourselves .. But I've seen some places where they have been dumped too ! Would I love to catch them I'd rub their nose in it !! Most free camps we stayed at had plenty of dump points for both !! But to some it's just as easy to do there dumping, wipe and bung the paper on top . On the ground . Ferrals !!

Guess thats where the old saying came from about "Öne Bad Apple"......Same as why do some Van parks charge a fortune come School Holiday times????, Maybe its because they can or maybe its because some people have no respect for others ??, For example this last September School Holidays we stayed at Cotton Tree Caravan Park and as some know it isnt the cheapest van park out there ey ??, BUT!! near every day .same old toilet recess some acehole who was born with no respect or no Mother to teach him manners and who happened to have more than three aceholes in his rear end would consistantly spray his last nights supper all over and i mean all over the pot and not even bother to flush afterwards!!!!.
But then again it is part of the World we live in and again Öne Bad Apple spoil it for the rest ey!!??..
Crying Shame allright!!..

well all the comments of this person illegally dumping a casette in a camp are spot on and it is hard enough to get councils to approve these priveliges, and maintain so all of you campers are not whingers but merely pointing out the regulations we need to abide if we want more of these great vacilities. leave no trace is what we all try to do

As well as the toilet issue there are many who seem to think it is ok to stay longer than what the signs indicate.

These two issues will result in camps being closed and guess who will be the first to whinge about it.

I was talking to a mate who was telling me how free camping so good for local shops, When I ask what did you think of the meat from the butcher in Cunnamulla , The answer we fill our freezer at Toowoomba , I rest my case so just use these places because they can and it cost nothing .
