One Day Holiday (Places to see in your own back yard)

Our motorhome is still off the road so hubby and I did a day drive in our car.  First we went to Oakey and had a look through the Army Aviation Museum, then took a back road (bitumen) to Goombungee and drove the main street and had a look at the showgrounds.  There were a few camping there.  Then across to Crows Nest for lunch and looked at a couple op-shops.  Have had a look at the Jimmy Crow statue and Bullock Team sculpture not that long ago so headed to Perseverance Dam and Lake Cressbrook for a look around.  Nice camp area at Lake Cressbrook ($8.00 single).  Some vans and tents here.  FIMG_4865.JPGrom there we went to the lookout in Ravensborne National Park.  On a clear day you can see for miles as the old saying goes and we haven't had many clear days of late around here.  Then up to Hampton.  Some camping in the free camp there too.  Then home.  An enjoyable day out and about.

It's funny, we travel far and wide but sometimes forget what's outside our own back door.

Sounds like a great day out Gaylene. You are right too. I have been going to Townsville to visit my daughter and her family for 11 years now, the last 4 staying for winter. Only this year I really ventured away on my "Big Day Out's". Had great days each day and even did a 5 dayer, wow!.

Keep enjoying your 'local's'.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

We live on Tropic of Capricorn. at Yeppoon QLD.
it just happens to be one of the popular spots the Victorians and NSW drivers like to dwell at
in season.

We normally leave here in visitors season.
Shops full, Van parks.roads, parking bays, beaches. Ughhhhh.
NSW.Vict plates everywhere.

When you look around though. there's Five Rocks miles of clear people free beaches. Keppel islands.
Shoalwater Bay. Byfield. Farnborough, The Caves. etc etc.

Beautiful area. with sub Tropics Climate. and Great fishing. Whales come through inside the islands.

I was nearly run over by a couple a few yrs ago.
Missus had to cut anchor rope as I booted the engine.
They awful big when coming up under you in a 5.25 tinnie

Luckily madam was looking over the side at the time and saw the huge bulk rising.
It blew right where we were anchored.($100 worth of Anchor. chain and nylon rope.)

Horrible place to live though. Don't even think about it.
all these noisy visitors for 5 months of yr.

Yer right Macka it is a nice spot, we were there sporting NSW plates in March this year stayed at the Island View at Kinka Beach, great park except the skeeters.

The locals were nice and friendly but if you want to keep people away tell them about the $26 plain hamburger and coke meal on Great Keppell, that should do it (haha).

Cheers

We often just head of for a days travel in any direction. Great just to spend some quality time together and see the local area. Not hard to run up a few hundred kilometres and come home relaxed. With my wife working away alot it is one of our enjoyments when we are together. Looking forward when the rig is ready for the weekend trips. Cheers

YEP.

KINKA is the holy Grail of Mosquito heaven.
You'll see none larger. nor hungrier anywhere on the planet.

And the park north of town. Get a spot on the "road" side not the beach side.
Or the Sand flies will eat you alive.

"OFF" is the only true deterrant of those things, Believe me.
When I was Paddling (Outriggers). We kept boats on beach in corner.
The sandies were a solid wall when we going to get canoes.

I started the OFF thing.
Walking through the Sandies with a clearing all round me.
Next day. Everybody had it on.

NO GOOD for Mossies. That takes DEET (REPEL 100 very good.)
IF you can get it in this country.)
MFG'd by WPC Brands, USA.
I bring it back with me. Magic, but no good for skin in regular doses.

Gaylene, like you a SEQalanite, lived here fore ever, but out and about now as a grey nomad, have discovered the Lockyer Valley, and more recently, the other side of the range. Looking forward to being a tourist in our home town again for a couple of weeks. BTW, loved the sculptures in Kogan, thanks for the heads up.
