Tassie expedition

We're thinking of travelling to Tassie for the summer leaving mid Dec . Can anyone let me know how soon I'd have to book . I read a post about CMCA having a rally over there in the new year

do they all stay in one place on an oval or a caravan park or spread out far and wide . We'll be free camping most of the time , just wondering what the free camping situation will be if theres a heap extra vans more than normal.

Probably too late now. Though it will depend if you can go under 2.2metres or not.

Word of warning book return when booking to go over.

The rally is in one place but motor homes will be all over the place before and after. That part will not cause you a problem as Tassie is the same size as mainland, just not flatened out.

We are over on the 3rd Dec and back early April on Day sailings.

good luck

Neil

The CMCA 31st Anniversary Rally is at Pontville Park, Pontville from 13 - 19th March, 2017. I can't answer your other questions but I think you had better start looking into booking the ferry across and back ASAP. Others will be able to tell you more. Cheers.

Mid January to late March will give you the best weather, book now and don't delay or you may miss out and book you return. There were heaps waiting to go home this year and couldn't get a booking for the time they wanted.

We always book in January for a June/July sailing for a trip north, it is generally sold out by end of February

The only way to find out is to do a dummy booking. Spirit of Tasmania. I tried a pensioner booking for Dec 11, return 16 Feb, twin cab ute towing van (8m overall.) I found that the latest available night booking available was Sunday 11 (last off peak was Nov 27.) Day time bookings were available on 10, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23 and 26th Dec. There were plenty of return sailings around the Feb return date.

As stated above, book a return date. It's easier to change your return date than it is to book a return when you are getting ready to return. In April this year there were some complaining they could not get return dates in less than a 3 month time period. This is not just a recent occurrence, when I went over in 2003 the waiting time was at least 3 weeks. The waiting time has got longer progressively over the years.
