OK now we have book to go back over to Tasmania, doing a day trip over on the 22nd of Dec. Now we live in Mildura and a good day's drive down to Melbourne. We will leave Mildura on the 21st and stay one night, somewhere about 1 Hrs drive into Melbourne. We need to be at the wharf about 2.5 Hrs before the boat sails. Don't want to travel at night. We are also traveling with 2 small dogs. So the question is were to stay ( free camp ??? ) that is close to Melbourne. Have had a look at camps 8 and drew a blank.
Werribee south caravan park may be a possibility, only 30 K's from the pier......although being 21st December you may have to book early. The only issue is the peak traffic you will suffer on the freeway, getting to the boat in the morning.
A lot of country folk use this park, as a base, when involved with frequent medical procedures in Melb. hospitals.

Werribee Sth is your best option. Straight onto the M1 Freeway and over the Westgate Bridge, and take the Todd Rd exit on the left once over the bridge. Werribee Sth is pet friendly and there's plenty of space to take them for a run across the road!
Check-in commences 2.5 hours prior to departure and closes 60 minutes before the ship is to set sail.
If you have special needs, you must check in at least 2 hours prior to departure.
Do they consider dogs to be special needs? If not then consider getting there a little before the 60 minutes cut off. Caravans are the last to be loaded as they go on the bottom drive through deck (and first off.)

Free camping is a problem close to any state capitol city. Suggest you bite the bullet and stay at a park. Werribee South is good if you have a dog or Ashley Gardens without a dog.

Hi Stephen .Now if your not fussy come straight down the Calder to Keilor you will see the Thunderdome on your right side and a huge Maccas/servo on your left .Pull in and go to the far north side and bloody camp ! I have been working in Woodend and when I return to Melb at 4.30 ish at night I get a small Maccas hit ,I have noticed a few Winnebago and vans parked there.Being a nomad I had a bit of a gasbag to a fella in the van and he said a fella said to a fella etc and here I am for the second time he spoke to the servo guy and he said no probs its no different to the semis ! So knock yourself out and save a Quid ! Cheers
